Senate President Davi Alcolumbre has refused to move forward with the avalanche of impeachment requests now sitting on his desk. According to his own remarks, there are 109 such requests targeting Supreme Court justices. The central target is Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Yet none of them have been allowed to advance.
That is not procedure. That is obstruction.
Alcolumbre holds the power to schedule these matters. He holds the power to send them to committee. He holds the power to let the Senate vote. Instead, he has chosen delay, deflection, and self-pity. Moraes has become the most polarizing figure in Brazilian public life. To his critics, he has concentrated power, punished political opponents, restricted speech, and turned the Court into a political actor rather than a constitutional referee. Whether one agrees with every accusation or not, 109 formal requests are not a rumor. They are a political fact. A functioning legislature would examine them. A captured legislature buries them.
Alcolumbre’s defenders say he is protecting institutional stability. In practice, he is protecting a justice the opposition wants held to account. The Senate president has made himself the gatekeeper of the Supreme Court. That is a dangerous inversion of the constitutional order. Congress is supposed to check the Court. It is not supposed to serve as its shield.
This is why Congressman Nikolas Ferreira’s video landed so hard. He did not invent a conspiracy. He named the bottleneck. “Someone is blocking us. Davi Alcolumbre.” That line spread because it described what millions of Brazilians can already see: petitions pile up, speeches multiply, and nothing moves.
Alcolumbre was elected with a commanding majority. That majority was not a blank check to freeze the Senate. Brazilians did not send senators to Brasília so one man could decide which scandals are too sensitive to touch. If the requests are weak, they should be voted down in the open. If they are serious, they should be investigated. What cannot continue is this quiet veto dressed up as statesmanship.
The timing makes the obstruction even more obvious. With elections approaching, Alcolumbre accuses his critics of playing politics. But refusing to allow a vote is itself a political act. It tells every senator, every voter, and every justice that the president of the Senate will not permit the Court to be challenged. That is not neutrality. That is alignment.
Brazil does not need more lectures about harmony between the powers. It needs the powers to actually check one another. A Senate that cannot even consider impeachment requests against a Supreme Court justice is not a coequal branch. It is an annex.
Alcolumbre can keep complaining about tone. He can keep talking about “pacification.” He can keep pretending that the real crisis is online criticism. None of that changes the record. One hundred and nine requests. Zero movement. One man in the way.
The Senate was not created to protect ministers. It was created to represent the people. Until Alcolumbre allows those inquiries to proceed, he is not leading the Senate. He is blocking it.
