BRAZIL: Near the attempt anniversary, a different kind of blow

Eight years ago this week, Jair Bolsonaro was stabbed in Juiz de Fora. That was an attempt on his life. Wednesday was not that. No blade. No hospital, but a court stamp.
The comparison being made on the right is a figure of speech, not a police report. The argument is this: in 2018 the attack tried to take Bolsonaro out of the race by force. In 2026, with his son Flávio as the candidate, the Dark Horse plea deal tries to take the campaign down by headline. Same season on the calendar. Different weapon.
The facts underneath the metaphor are real. Justice André Mendonça approved the plea bargain of Antônio Carlos Freixo Jr., known as Mineiro. The deal records transfers of about US$12.3 million to a U.S. fund used to finance Dark Horse, the film about Jair Bolsonaro. The money moved at the request of banker Daniel Vorcaro after Flávio sought sponsorship for the project. G1, Folha, CNN Brasil, Valor, O Globo, and Estadão all reported the homologation on September 9.
Flávio had already tried to close the subject. He called it private sponsorship, not public money, a “closed page.” AtlasIntel, as reported by CNN earlier this year, measured damage to his numbers after the Intercept published the Vorcaro messages. An official plea now keeps that page open four weeks from Election Day.
The other half of the argument is what did not happen the same day. Mendonça did not issue a matching public step against Fábio Luís Lula da Silva, known as Lulinha. The Federal Police inquiries into alleged influence peddling at the Health Ministry and Dataprev — involving lobbyist Roberta Luchsinger and ties to “Careca do INSS” — remain on Mendonça’s desk. VEJA, Folha, BBC Brasil, and CNN have covered those files since late July. They did not get a September 9 headline of equal weight.
The cases are not twins. Freixo already had a signed deal with the Prosecutor General’s Office from August. Homologation was the next legal act. Lulinha’s files are still at the investigation stage. Sitting on the Freixo deal would have been called a shield for Flávio. Signing it in September is being called a gift to Lula’s campaign. Both accusations can be made from the same calendar.
So the conservative reading is narrow and hard: the anniversary week of a real attempt on Jair’s life has been filled, this time, by an attempt to wound the campaign that carries his name. The first attack was criminal violence. This one is political timing. Voters can reject the comparison as cheap. They cannot reject the timing. The plea is now official. The Lulinha inquiries are not the story of the day. That is the cut.
