Tragic Vacation Ends in Heartbreak: Toddler Drowns in Airbnb Hot Tub
By Hotspotnews
In a devastating incident that has shocked a family and highlighted the dangers of water around young children, a 20-month-old girl drowned in a hot tub at a vacation rental in Kissimmee, Florida, on December 13, 2025.
The family, visiting from Washington, D.C., was staying at a property listed as an Airbnb in the Four Corners area. According to authorities from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, the girl’s father, 33-year-old Reynard Tyrone Hough, took his daughter into the hot tub in the early hours of the morning, sometime between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. The outdoor temperature was around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and the hot tub had a water depth of approximately 37 inches.
Hough reportedly admitted to investigators that he had been drinking alcohol earlier in the evening and had ingested two different types of narcotics. He stated that his daughter was awake and wanted to be with him, so he carried her outside to the hot tub. While holding her in his arms, he fell asleep for about 15 to 20 minutes. When he awoke, he felt her head drop and realized she was limp and unresponsive, with her face having been submerged in the water.
He immediately carried her inside to her mother, who was asleep with another infant, and emergency services were called around 3:30 a.m. Paramedics rushed the toddler to AdventHealth Celebration hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 4:30 a.m. The cause of death was determined to be drowning.
Detectives found no reasonable explanation for why Hough, feeling the lingering effects of alcohol, would take a non-swimming toddler into the hot tub under those conditions. He was initially arrested on charges of child neglect causing great bodily harm and later charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child. He remains in custody at the Osceola County Jail as the investigation continues. The child’s mother was not charged, as she was asleep during the incident.
Family members have expressed profound grief, describing the father as distraught and the loss as unimaginable, especially so close to the holidays.
### A Sobering Reminder of Water Safety Risks
This tragedy underscores the silent and swift danger of drowning, particularly for young children. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for toddlers, and it can occur in mere inches of water, often without any splashing or cries for help. Hot tubs pose additional risks due to their depth, warm water that can cause drowsiness, and the relaxing environment that may lead to impaired supervision.
Experts emphasize that active, undistracted supervision is essential around any body of water—no child should ever be left unattended, even for a moment. Alcohol and drugs impair judgment and reaction time, making them particularly hazardous in such settings. Vacation rentals with pools or hot tubs should prompt extra vigilance, as unfamiliar surroundings can contribute to accidents.
Parents and caregivers are urged to learn CPR, install barriers around water features, and designate a “water watcher” during gatherings. In many areas, including Florida, a significant portion of child drownings involve visitors on vacation, highlighting how relaxation can sometimes lower guards.
While no words can ease the pain for this grieving family, this heartbreaking event serves as a stark call to prioritize safety and never underestimate the risks of water, especially with little ones.
