By Hotspotnews
The United States has kicked off its 2026 G20 Presidency on a strong note, hosting a productive Sherpa meeting in Washington from December 15-16. This gathering marked the first major event under American leadership, bringing together high-level representatives from key global economies to set the stage for a renewed focus on economic growth and prosperity.
The meeting drew participants from the African Union, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom. Poland attended as the sole full guest participant invited by the U.S. for its host year, underscoring America’s intent to align the forum with nations sharing similar economic visions.
The U.S. assumed the G20 Presidency on December 1, a milestone that aligns with the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations. Under President Trump’s direction, the presidency aims to refocus the G20 on its foundational economic mandate, moving away from broader social or environmental agendas to prioritize tangible results that benefit global prosperity.
During the Sherpa meeting, the United States outlined its three core thematic priorities: unleashing economic prosperity through reduced regulatory burdens, ensuring access to reliable and affordable energy sources, and advancing cutting-edge innovative technologies. To drive progress on these fronts, four dedicated working groups were established. Three groups will concentrate on developing specific deliverables tied to the core themes, while a fourth will explore potential areas of consensus on trade-related matters.
These working groups are designed to facilitate in-depth discussions among world leaders on pressing economic challenges, fostering practical outcomes rather than abstract commitments.
The culmination of the U.S. presidency will be the G20 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for December 14-15, 2026, at Trump National Doral Miami. This venue, chosen for its world-class facilities and strategic location, will host heads of state and government as they address the forum’s refocused agenda amid America’s historic semiquincentennial year.
The successful Sherpa meeting signals a promising start to the U.S.-led G20, emphasizing collaboration on core economic issues to deliver real-world benefits for participating nations and the global economy at large. As preparations advance, the working groups will play a pivotal role in shaping deliverables that reflect President Trump’s vision of a results-oriented G20.
