Lula’s Shameful Defense of Maduro: A Global Embarrassment for Brazil

By Hotspotnews

In the wake of the decisive U.S. military operation in January 2026 that removed Nicolás Maduro from power and brought him to face justice in America, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has once again aligned himself with authoritarian tyrants at the expense of Brazil’s international standing.

Rather than welcoming the end of Maduro’s brutal socialist regime—which has driven millions into exile, wrecked Venezuela’s economy, and turned the country into a narco-state—Lula condemned the action as an “unacceptable line” crossed by the United States. He insisted that any trial of Maduro must occur in Venezuela, not abroad, framing the U.S. intervention as a violation of sovereignty and a dangerous precedent that recalls the worst eras of foreign interference in Latin America.

This stance ignores the reality: Maduro’s rule was marked by rigged elections, violent repression of dissent, and widespread corruption. The U.S. operation, while bold, ended a long-standing threat to regional stability and opened the door for genuine democratic restoration in Venezuela. Yet Lula, ever the ideologue, chose to side with the dictator over democratic principles, warning of a “humanitarian catastrophe” from the strikes and urging the United Nations to respond vigorously.

Brazilian conservatives and patriots rightly view this as a worldwide shame. Lula’s reflexive anti-Americanism and reluctance to criticize leftist strongmen burnish Brazil’s image not as a leader in democracy and freedom, but as an apologist for failed regimes. In defending Maduro’s right to be tried at home—where he could manipulate or evade justice—Lula undermines the very values of accountability and rule of law that Brazil should champion.

The president’s words have fueled domestic outrage, highlighting the deep divide between those who see the U.S. action as justified liberation and those, like Lula, who prioritize ideological solidarity over the suffering of the Venezuelan people. Brazil deserves better leadership—one that stands firmly against tyranny rather than offering it excuses.
