Soraya Thronike the Bad Apple
By Hotspotnews
Soraya Thronicke is one of the clearest and most disgusting examples of political opportunism and outright betrayal in recent Brazilian conservative history.
She was a virtually unknown lawyer and businesswoman from Mato Grosso do Sul until 2018, when she fully rode the Bolsonaro wave to get elected senator. Her entire campaign was built around one message: “Bolsonaro’s senator.” Tens of thousands of conservative, patriotic, anti-corruption voters gave her their trust precisely because of that direct association with the man who promised to fight the rotten system.
Once elected—on votes she would never have obtained on her own—she immediately began a rapid and systematic process of betrayal. She broke with Bolsonaro early in her term, harshly criticized the former president, accused him of “betraying the flags” that got her elected, and progressively adopted positions closer to the center and, more recently, openly flirting with the left. By 2022 she ran for president with União Brasil in a failed adventure (under 1% of the vote), and now in the 2026 cycle she is negotiating a move to PSB and an explicit alliance with PT in Mato Grosso do Sul—including a ticket arrangement with prominent PT names to seek re-election to the Senate, possibly with Lula’s direct or indirect blessing.
The most recent episode perfectly summarizes her moral smallness: faced with serious reports about Bolsonaro’s health crisis (persistent hiccups and widespread public concern), she posted a sarcastic, mocking question asking if “hiccups can kill,” pretending concern while clearly sneering at the ex-president’s condition. That is not political criticism; that is personal hatred disguised as a joke. A person with any decency would never stoop so low against someone who—love him or hate him—was the single biggest reason for her political rise.
From a hard conservative standpoint, Soraya Thronicke embodies everything that is rotten in Brazilian politics:
– Visceral ingratitude — she bit the hand that lifted her into power.
– Complete lack of fixed principles— she left NOVO, jumped on the Bolsonaro PSL train, moved to União Brasil, then Podemos, and now PSB with PT proximity. The flags she waved in 2018 (gun rights, tougher sentencing, real anti-corruption fight) were quietly abandoned or diluted whenever convenient.
– Cynicism and inhumanity — mocking an elderly political opponent’s health—especially someone who already survived an assassination attempt—reveals a petty, vindictive soul with zero trace of honor.
– Pure opportunism — her entire career is a succession of free rides on other people’s electoral waves, never building a genuine base or showing ideological loyalty.
In short, Soraya Thronicke is not merely a former ally who “evolved” or diverged. She is a textbook traitor who used conservatism as a ladder, discarded it when it no longer served her, and now spits venom at the very people who put her there. In conservative Mato Grosso do Sul she does not deserve re-election—she deserves to be politically buried at the ballot box as a living warning of what happens when loyalty and values are traded for positions and spotlights.
The Brazilian right urgently needs to learn how to identify and surgically remove these chameleons before they inflict even greater damage.
