Opposition Senator Flávio Bolsonaro Delivers Strong Message on Day Two of U.S. Tariffs Hearings: “Worst Possible Moment” to Punish Brazil

    By Hotspotnews

Washington, D.C. – On the second and final day of public hearings regarding the proposed 25% U.S. tariffs on Brazilian goods, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) stepped forward with a clear, unapologetic defense of Brazilian interests – exposing the political games being played by the Lula administration.

Speaking first in his panel before the U.S. International Trade Commission, the presidential pre-candidate delivered a concise but powerful five-minute statement. He directly opposed the tariffs, defended innovations like Pix, and urged American authorities to cancel the measure and pursue genuine negotiations instead. Most notably, Bolsonaro warned that imposing the tariffs now – just months before Brazil’s October presidential elections – would be the “worst possible moment.” Such a move, he argued, would hand Lula a political victory, allowing the PT to blame external forces and the opposition while shielding its own policy failures.

This was no empty rhetoric. Bolsonaro highlighted how previous tariffs had not weakened Lula but instead strengthened his narrative at home, punishing Brazilian workers and exporters who bear the real costs. He called for preserving the successful U.S.-Brazil partnership through dialogue, not punishment.

The contrast with the Lula government could not be starker. While the administration again limited itself to observers – avoiding a direct public defense – opposition voices and the private sector carried the weight. Industry representatives from both nations continued pushing for exemptions, emphasizing the mutual economic harm of broad tariffs on supply chains, consumers, and jobs.

Day Two reinforced what many conservatives have long warned: Brazil’s vulnerabilities in international trade stem not just from U.S. policy but from years of fiscal irresponsibility, regulatory overreach, questionable environmental enforcement, and digital rules that raise legitimate concerns in Washington. The PT’s preference for ideological posturing over pragmatic governance has left the country exposed.

Flávio Bolsonaro’s participation demonstrated real leadership – engaging directly, speaking truth to power, and prioritizing Brazil’s long-term interests over short-term political theater. As the July 15 deadline for President Trump’s final decision approaches, one thing is clear: Brazil needs accountable voices fighting for free enterprise and strong alliances, not a government content to watch and later assign blame.

The coming weeks will reveal whether Washington listens to reason or proceeds with measures that could further strain relations. For now, credit goes to those who showed up to defend Brazil when the official channels chose silence.
