    Certification by Compromised Hands

Opinion based on Terrence McCoy author of the Washington Post interview/article titled “Why Bolsonaro says U.S. took him in: Trump ‘convinced’ Brazil is no longer a democracy” (published November 7, 2026).

    By Hotspotnews

In a recent interview to The Washington Post, Flávio Bolsonaro named as one of the reasons for his exile to the US, the state of decay of Brazilian institutions, that no longer function freely and are for a while under the command of Lula. According to Flávio, the American institutions still do, and give him the safety heals he needs to continue his mission. He believes President Donald Trump sees Brazil is no longer a full democracy. The sequence he described is short and concrete: the runoff results were announced, a Supreme Court justice ordered him to surrender his passports seven minutes later. At that moment he realized, he would be a victim of the same persecution his father has suffered. He crossed into Argentina, reached Miami, and the Trump administration admitted him on humanitarian grounds. From Florida he can continue arguing that the election itself was compromised and that remaining in Brazil would have meant the same judicial neutralization that already reached his father, and several other allies.

The formal result certification,  came from the Superior Electoral Court under the presidency of Minister Kassio Nunes Marques, a justice nominated to the Supreme Court by then President Jair Bolsonaro. That fact has been used to reject any simple claim that the electoral body is staffed only by Lula appointees. It does not, however, restore confidence once the same Federal Police materials that exposed contacts between Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes, and Minister Toffoli, to the collapsed Banco Master are taken into the light, makes it very difficult to swallow .

Those materials under investigation. also name Minister Kassio Nunes Marques describe alleged monthly payments of R$ 500,000 to his son Kevin Marques, a contract worth hundreds of millions of reais involving a law firm linked to associates, and personal benefits allegedly provided by the banker Daniel Vorcaro, including payments for luxury accommodations and other services. Parallel allegations touch Moraes (messages, meetings, and a large contract with his wife’s firm) and other justices across different appointments. The cases remain under investigation or discussion inside the Supreme Court; the justices have denied improper conduct.

When the officials who administer and certify elections are themselves under scrutiny for relationships with a financier at the center of a major fraud investigation, the formal act of certification carries less weight. The last-minute Supreme Court order that extended voting hours, which Nunes Marques himself noted created difficulties in the process, adds another layer of procedural controversy. Critics argue that a small number of justices have accumulated powers and relationships that make ordinary political competition and subsequent legal challenge feel predetermined. Supporters of the court maintain that the investigations rest on evidence and that electoral administration retains technical safeguards. The Washington Post interview does not resolve that disagreement; it simply keeps the skeptical view audible from outside the jurisdiction whose fairness is contested.

Bolsonaro has declined to detail the logistics of his departure. What the Master revelations supply is independent documentation that key figures in the certifying institutions maintained relationships ordinary citizens are entitled to regard as disqualifying. In that light the interview functions less as a conventional post-election complaint and more as a wake up call to show how Brazil election system is and has been contested for many years.

Whether Brazilian voters ultimately treat the certified margin as decisive, or continue to see it as the product of institutions they no longer trust,  Flávio was certainly becoming a target of persecution by political vengeance.
‘There is no doubt about the real situation in Brazil right now. Bolsonaro is a defying leader against the establishment in Brazil. He had no choice. He had to leave and continue his fight for a free Brazil.

Terrence McCoy is the author of the Washington Post interview/article titled “Why Bolsonaro says U.S. took him in: Trump ‘convinced’ Brazil is no longer a democracy” (published November 7, 2026).

Marina Dias (based in Brasília) contributed to the report.

The piece is based on an in-person interview conducted with Flávio Bolsonaro in Aventura, Florida (near Miami).

Kassio Nunes Marques as TSE president and Bolsonaro nominee

    • Agência Brasil: “Presidente do TSE liga para Lula para parabenizar reeleição” (25 Oct 2026) — confirms he telephoned both candidates and proclaimed the result.
    • Valor Econômico: “Quem é Kassio Nunes Marques, presidente do TSE nas eleições 2026?” — states he was nominated to the STF by Jair Bolsonaro in 2020 and elected TSE president.

Banco Master allegations involving Nunes Marques

    • UOL (Leonardo Sakamoto column, 6 Nov 2026): “Com Moraes de amigo, STF tem cinco abacaxis de Vorcaro para descascar” — reports Federal Police materials alleging monthly payments of R$ 500,000 to Kevin Marques (Kassio’s son), a large contract involving associates (“Turma do KN”), and personal benefits from Vorcaro. Also covers parallel allegations against Moraes and others.

Alexandre de Moraes and Banco Master

    • AP News: “Brazilian Supreme Court justice de Moraes under fire for alleged links to disgraced banker” (2 Sep 2026) — details messages, meetings, and the contract between Banco Master and Moraes’ wife’s law firm.
    • AP News: “Brazil’s Supreme Court weighs a graft investigation into Justice Alexandre de Moraes” (15 Sep 2026) — covers the court’s handling of the allegations.

    Voting-hour extension and Kassio’s comments

    • Folha de S.Paulo: “Kassio diz que decisão de Zanin de prorrogar votação não provocou ‘nenhuma alteração’ na eleição” (25 Oct 2026) — Kassio notes the last-minute Supreme Court order created difficulties but says it did not change the outcome.

Flávio Bolsonaro’s post-election legal challenges and margin

    • O Globo: “‘Terceiro turno’ no TSE tem 11 ações de Flávio Bolsonaro para cassar Lula e Alckmin” (6 Nov 2026) — reports the margin of roughly 4.4 million votes and the judicial actions filed afterward.

    Washington Post interview
The original Washington Post piece (“Why Bolsonaro says U.S. took him in: Trump ‘convinced’ Brazil is no longer a democracy,” 7 Nov 2026) is paywalled. The quotes and framing used in the article come from contemporaneous summaries of that interview (including the claims about institutions, Trump’s view, the passport order timing, and the refusal to detail the exit).
