Eduardo Bolsonaro Steps Away from Congress to Rally U.S. Support Amid Family’s Legal Battles

    By Hotspotorlando News

**March 19, 2025** – Eduardo Bolsonaro, the outspoken son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has temporarily vacated his seat in Brazil’s Congress to embark on a mission in the United States. His objective: to drum up international backing for his father and their political faction, which he claims is under relentless persecution by Brazil’s judiciary and left-wing establishment. The move underscores the Bolsonaro family’s strategy to pivot toward global conservative networks as they face mounting legal and political pressure at home.

Eduardo, a federal deputy since 2015 and a key figure in Brazil’s far-right movement, has been in the U.S. since late February 2025, initially for what he described as pre-scheduled engagements. However, he has now confirmed plans to extend his stay indefinitely, framing it as a continuation of his role as the family’s foreign emissary. “We’re facing a coordinated attack in Brazil,” Eduardo stated in a recent interview. “The U.S. is a natural ally to expose this injustice and build a counteroffensive.”

The decision comes at a tumultuous time for the Bolsonaro clan. Jair Bolsonaro, who led Brazil from 2019 to 2022, is currently barred from running for office until 2030, a ruling stemming from his actions following the 2022 election. In February 2024, Brazil’s Supreme Court seized his passport as part of investigations into an alleged coup attempt to overturn the election results that brought President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to power. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, a central figure in these probes, has emerged as a lightning rod for the Bolsonaros’ ire, with Eduardo openly calling for U.S. sanctions against him and other Brazilian officials.

Eduardo’s U.S. campaign builds on his prior outreach to American conservative circles. He has attended events like the National Rifle Association’s annual meetings and the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), forging ties with figures aligned with President Donald Trump. The former U.S. president, who returned to office in January 2025, has been a vocal supporter of Jair Bolsonaro, and the elder Bolsonaro recently expressed optimism that Trump would back Eduardo’s efforts. “Trump knows what we’re up against,” Jair said in a statement. “He’ll stand with us.”

Legal troubles aren’t the only motivator for Eduardo’s relocation. In February 2025, Brazil’s Workers Party moved to seize his passport, alleging he was a flight risk amid investigations into his own activities. Justice Moraes rejected the request on March 18, 2025, a rare win for the Bolsonaros in their ongoing clash with the judiciary. Nonetheless, Eduardo has hinted at seeking political asylum in the U.S., a step that could escalate tensions between Brazil and its northern ally.

Critics in Brazil view Eduardo’s departure as an abandonment of his congressional duties and a sign of the family’s desperation. “He’s fleeing accountability,” said Workers Party leader Gleisi Hoffmann. “This isn’t about diplomacy—it’s about dodging justice.” Supporters, however, see it as a bold play to keep the Bolsonaro brand alive on the global stage, especially as Jair’s political future hangs in limbo.

For now, Eduardo appears undeterred. From his temporary base in the U.S., he has vowed to lobby for punitive measures against Brazilian authorities and to rally conservative influencers and policymakers to his cause. Whether this gambit will yield tangible results—or simply deepen the Bolsonaro family’s polarizing legacy—remains to be seen.
