FSU Shooting Hits Close to Home for Orlando’s College Community

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Hotspotorlando News.A tragic shooting at Florida State University on April 17, 2025, left two dead and six injured, sending shockwaves through Florida’s college communities, including Orlando’s vibrant student population. The midday attack near FSU’s student union has Central Florida residents reflecting on safety and solidarity as details unfold.

The suspect, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, an FSU student and son of a Leon County sheriff’s deputy, allegedly used his mother’s former service weapon to carry out the shooting. Tallahassee police shot Ikner, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is in custody but not cooperating with investigators. Authorities have not yet released a motive, leaving many questions unanswered. The two deceased victims were not students, and six others are receiving treatment at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, one in critical condition.

For Orlando, home to thousands of FSU students and alumni, the tragedy feels personal. UCF freshman Maria Torres, who has friends at FSU, said, “It’s terrifying to think this could happen at any campus. We’re all shaken.” Local FSU alumni groups are organizing vigils, with one planned at Lake Eola this weekend to honor the victims. The shooting also resonates with survivors of the 2016 Pulse nightclub tragedy, who see parallels in the community’s grief and resilience.

FSU canceled classes and events through at least April 20, offering counseling at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Students described chaos as gunfire erupted, forcing some to hide in classrooms or flee the student union. The university, no stranger to violence after a 2014 library shooting, faces renewed calls for safety measures. President Richard McCullough called the act “heartbreaking,” vowing support for the Seminole family.

As the FBI assists in the investigation, Orlando’s community is rallying. Local leaders urge students to access campus mental health resources, and HotspotOrlando encourages readers to share tips with the Tallahassee Police Department or FBI anonymously. This tragedy reminds us to hold loved ones close and advocate for safer campuses statewide.
