Party Discipline Is Not Optional: When a PL Deputy Embraces the PT Machine

In the heart of Bahia, a scene unfolded that should outrage every true member of the Partido Liberal. Federal Deputy João Bacelar, elected under the PL banner and expected to defend the values that brought millions of Brazilians to the streets against the return of the Workers’ Party, stood on the same stage as Jaques Wagner and Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues. He publicly declared his support for the PT governor’s re-election and even affixed a PT sticker to his chest. This was not a private conversation or a pragmatic local gesture. It was a public endorsement of the very political force the PL was founded to confront.
The Partido Liberal is not a personal vehicle for individual ambition. It is the institutional home of the conservative and liberal resistance that rejected the disasters of previous PT governments and rallied behind the principles of economic freedom, family values, public security, and national sovereignty. National leadership has been clear: party members are not free to campaign for left-wing candidates. A circular from the national presidency explicitly prohibited such support and warned of disciplinary consequences. Ignoring that directive is not independence. It is open defiance.
Bahia has long been dominated by a PT political machine that prioritizes loyalty to its own network over results for ordinary citizens. Supporting the continuity of that machine while wearing the PL label mocks the voters who trusted the party’s opposition credentials. Many of those voters are conservatives who suffered under years of high crime, economic stagnation, and ideological capture of public institutions. They did not elect PL deputies so those deputies could later climb onto PT platforms and call it “progress.”
History shows that some politicians treat parties as temporary platforms rather than permanent commitments. They ride the wave of popular rejection of the left, secure a mandate, and then quietly realign with the established power structures when it serves their personal interests. This pattern erodes trust. If party membership becomes a flag of convenience rather than a binding obligation, the PL loses the moral authority it needs to present itself as a coherent alternative.
True partisanship demands consistency. A deputy who votes with the government when convenient, softens criticism of PT governance, and then appears as a supporting actor in the governor’s campaign is not practicing pragmatism. He is practicing opportunism. The party exists precisely to prevent such behavior from going unchallenged. Discipline is not persecution. It is the mechanism that protects the party’s identity and the expectations of its base.
The correct response is straightforward. Party organs should open formal proceedings for violation of the national directive. The membership and the public deserve a clear signal that the PL still distinguishes between its own ranks and those of its opponents. Silence or half-measures only encourage further erosion. Conservatives who built this party through conviction, not convenience, have every right to insist that elected officials honor the platform under which they were elected.
Brazil’s political culture has long tolerated fluid allegiances. That culture produced repeated cycles of disappointment. The PL was meant to break the cycle. When one of its own deputies publicly endorses the continuity of the PT project in Bahia, the party faces a simple test: will it defend its principles, or will it look the other way for the sake of temporary local arrangements?
The answer should be unambiguous. Party loyalty is not a slogan. It is the price of remaining under the PL banner.
