Paid “Conservative” Voices Caught in Astroturf Operation

Brazil’s Banco Master Scandal: Paid “Conservative” Voices Caught in Astroturf Operation**

In what should have been a straightforward regulatory action, the Central Bank’s swift liquidation of Banco Master has been turned into a multimillion-real propaganda campaign masquerading as grassroots conservative outrage.

Leaked documents reveal a highly organized effort—internally codenamed “Projeto DV”—that recruited numerous right-leaning digital influencers with a clear mission: question the Central Bank’s speed and motives, recycle selective passages from a TCU technical note, and present it all as independent analysis. The offers were anything but subtle: contracts reportedly worth up to millions of reais, complete with ready-made scripts, suggested phrasing, sample posts, and strict non-disclosure agreements.

This was not spontaneous citizen journalism. It was a corporate PR offensive with a budget, scripted talking points, and paid actors wearing the mask of ideological independence.

For years the Brazilian right has justifiably denounced the manipulation of narratives by legacy media, government-aligned outlets, and coordinated influencer networks on the left. The same standard must now be applied in the opposite direction.

When dozens of supposedly independent conservative creators simultaneously push nearly identical lines, use the same selective framing, and do so only after receiving very substantial payments from the same source, the public is being deliberately misled. That is not free speech. That is commercial advertising disguised as conviction.

The Central Bank’s handling of Banco Master can and should be debated on its merits. Questions about timing, alternatives, and impact on depositors are legitimate. But those questions deserve to be raised by people who arrived at their conclusions independently—not by contractors reading from a pre-approved script under legal gag order.

The damage here is serious. Every time a trusted conservative voice is revealed to have been on the payroll for coordinated messaging, the entire ecosystem loses credibility. The right cannot credibly complain about media manipulation while quietly running the same playbook in defense of private interests.

If the allegations hold—and the mountain of evidence including signed contracts, WhatsApp exchanges, rejected proposals, and whistleblower disclosures suggests they will—this episode should serve as a painful but necessary wake-up call.

Conservatives must decide: do we want to be known as the side that values truth over payment, or just another team willing to rent out its megaphone to the highest bidder?

Brazilians deserve better than paid performances dressed up as principle.
