Formula 1 Returns to Miami: Sprint Weekend Heats Up at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix With a Focus on Max Verstappen’s Progress

The vibrant streets and high-octane energy of Miami Gardens are alive this weekend as the Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix 2026 takes center stage at the Miami International Autodrome. This marks the fourth round of the season and the second sprint-format event, promising intense action across three days packed with racing, parties, and South Florida flair.2133

Weekend Schedule Highlights (All Times Local EDT)

    • Friday, May 1: Practice 1 and Sprint Qualifying wrapped up, setting the stage.
    • Saturday, May 2 (Today): F2 Sprint, F1 Sprint Race at 12:00 PM, followed by Grand Prix Qualifying at 4:00 PM.48
    • Sunday, May 3: Support races, Drivers’ Parade, and the Main Grand Prix at 4:00 PM (57 laps on the 5.412 km circuit).2

The temporary circuit around Hard Rock Stadium blends high-speed straights, tight corners, and elevation changes, delivering top speeds over 350 km/h and plenty of overtaking opportunities—especially at Turns 1, 11, and 17.47

Sprint Qualifying: McLaren Strikes First, Verstappen Shows Progress

Lando Norris delivered a standout performance in Sprint Qualifying on Friday, snatching pole with a blistering 1:27.869 lap. McLaren showed strong pace with upgrades improving rear grip, as teammate Oscar Piastri slotted into P3.50

Sprint Qualifying Top 10 (key highlights):

      1. Lando Norris (McLaren) – 1:27.869
      2. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) – 1:28.091
      3. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) – 1:28.108
      4. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
    • 5. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – 1:28.461
      1. George Russell (Mercedes)86

Max Verstappen qualified a solid P5 for today’s Sprint. After a difficult start to the 2026 season (sitting 9th in the Drivers’ Championship with only 12 points), Red Bull brought a major upgrade package to Miami focused on weight reduction, aero improvements, and better balance. Verstappen described the car as feeling “more together” and “normal,” noting they’ve “almost halved” the gap to the leaders compared to previous races where they were over a second off pace.8283

He was P2 in the sole practice session and called it a “massive improvement,” though he acknowledged ongoing weaknesses in high-speed sectors. This marks a positive step for Red Bull after early-season struggles with the RB22’s weight and instability—no major incidents for Verstappen, just steady progress in a competitive field.87

    Championship Context

Entering Miami, the Drivers’ standings reflect a tight battle at the top:

    • Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) leads with 72 points.
    • George Russell (Mercedes) is close on 63.
    • Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) sits third on 49.
    • Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) on 41.
    • Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are further back but hungry, while Verstappen looks to climb with today’s Sprint points on offer.60

McLaren’s recent form boost, Mercedes’ consistency, and Red Bull’s upgrades could shake up the order.

Beyond the Track: Miami’s Signature Party Atmosphere

The Miami GP is as much about glamour and entertainment as racing. Fan Fest in Miami Beach (April 29–May 3) offers free experiences, while the weekend features performances from artists like Zedd, Snoop Dogg, Marshmello, and more. Luxury activations, pop-up parties in the Design District, and nightlife at spots like LIV Miami keep the vibe electric.38

    What to Watch For

    • Can Norris convert pole into a sprint win?
    • Will Verstappen build on P5 and Red Bull’s upgrades for points and Sunday momentum?
    • Mercedes vs. McLaren vs. Ferrari at the sharp end?
    • Any weather drama? Some forecasts mention possible Sunday showers.36

Tune in live for today’s Sprint and tomorrow’s main event—whether you’re trackside in Miami Gardens or streaming from home, this weekend delivers pure F1 spectacle in one of the world’s most exciting cities.33
