When the Police Ask the Government for Help Against the Court

When the Police Ask the Government for Help Against the Court

    By Hotspotnews

Something strange is happening in Brazil right now, and ordinary people should pay attention.

The Federal Police is investigating a big fraud scheme at the INSS. This is the system that pays retirement benefits to millions of Brazilians. Crooks have been taking illegal discounts from retirees’ payments, stealing huge amounts of money from people who worked hard their whole lives. One of the names that keeps coming up in the investigation is Lulinha, the son of President Lula.

The case is being overseen by Supreme Court Minister André Mendonça. He recently ordered the police to report every step of the investigation to him right away and to tell him in advance if they change any officers working on the case. The police did not like this. They went to the government’s own lawyers (the AGU) and asked them to find a way to fight back against the minister’s orders.

Let that sink in. The police, which work under the president’s government, asked the government’s lawyers to push against a Supreme Court judge who is trying to keep a closer eye on an investigation that involves the president’s own son.

This looks bad for a simple reason. When powerful people or their families face investigations, the last thing the country needs is the executive branch trying to loosen the court’s grip. It creates the strong appearance that the system is being used to protect its own instead of following the truth wherever it leads.

    What this could mean

If this kind of move succeeds, it sends a clear message: when the investigation gets too close to people with high connections, the rules can be bent. Police teams can be shifted around. Oversight can be challenged. Deadlines and reporting requirements can be softened. Over time, this weakens the idea that no one is above the law.

Retirees who already lost money will have even less reason to believe the system will fully clean up the fraud. Public trust in both the police and the courts takes another hit. Politicians and their relatives learn that pressure and institutional maneuvering can create breathing room. Future investigations into powerful figures become harder to run independently.

Brazil already struggles with the sense that justice works differently depending on who you know. Actions like this feed that belief. They make it easier for the powerful to slow things down or change the rules mid-game.

A strong democracy needs independent courts that can supervise sensitive cases without the executive branch rushing in to push back. It also needs a police force that investigates fully, without looking over its shoulder at political consequences. When those lines blur, the people who lose are the ordinary Brazilians who depend on fair rules and honest institutions.

The investigation into the INSS frauds should continue without special treatment for anyone. The court should keep its proper oversight. And the government should stay out of efforts to limit that oversight, especially when the president’s family is involved. Anything less damages the rule of law and leaves ordinary citizens wondering whose side the system is really on.
