Lula’s Maduro Playbook: Attack, Retreat, and Beg for Dialogue

Lula’s Maduro Playbook: Attack, Retreat, and Beg for Dialogue

    By Hotspotnews

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has once again shown the familiar pattern of leftist leadership: loud confrontation when it plays well at home, followed by a quick retreat when reality sets in. After publicly blasting the United States for revoking the visa of Brazil’s ambassador to Washington—calling the move irresponsible and thoughtless—Lula is now signaling that he wants a conversation with President Donald Trump. The pivot is so abrupt it has drawn comparisons to the erratic style long associated with Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro: bite hard, then blow soft.

This is not statesmanship. It is political theater mixed with necessity. For months, tensions between Brasília and Washington have risen over trade, judicial actions against former President Jair Bolsonaro’s circle, and U.S. concerns about Brazil’s direction. Trump’s administration has responded with concrete measures, including the visa action that clearly stung the Brazilian government. Lula’s initial response was pure performance—strong words designed to rally his base and paint the United States as the aggressor. Yet within days the same president is talking about the need for dialogue with Trump, framing it as a call for major powers to sit down and discuss global conflicts.

The inconsistency is glaring. One moment Lula postures as the defender of Brazilian sovereignty against American “interference.” The next he is reaching out to the very leader he criticized, hoping to reset the relationship on more favorable terms. Conservatives in Brazil and beyond have seen this movie before. Leaders on the left often escalate rhetoric for domestic political gain, only to soft-pedal when economic interests, trade flows, or diplomatic isolation become too costly. Maduro perfected a version of this under pressure: defiant speeches paired with quiet attempts to ease sanctions or reopen channels. Lula’s latest shift follows the same script, even if the settings differ.

Brazil is heading into a consequential election year. Voters deserve clarity, not zigzagging. A serious government does not attack a major partner one day and plead for talks the next without explaining the change. Trump, by contrast, has shown a consistent willingness to use leverage—tariffs, visas, clear public statements—while remaining open to direct engagement when the other side is prepared to deal in good faith. That approach has forced clarity where previous administrations preferred ambiguity.

Lula’s government can continue the cycle of confrontation and retreat if it chooses. But the costs are becoming harder to ignore. Strong nations protect their interests without theatrics, and they do not treat foreign policy as a campaign prop. Brazilians watching this latest episode have every reason to ask whether their president is leading with principle or simply reacting to pressure. The record so far points to the latter.
