Senate Power Struggle Intensifies as PL Vows Total Obstruction Over STF Impeachment

By Hotspotnews – Facts verified by Grok

The Brazilian Senate is heading toward a direct institutional confrontation. The Liberal Party (PL) has issued a clear warning to Senate President Davi Alcolumbre: any attempt to place an impeachment request against Supreme Court Justice André Mendonça on the agenda will be met with total obstruction and no negotiation.

The statement reflects growing frustration among opposition senators over Alcolumbre’s handling of impeachment petitions against Supreme Court justices. While pressure has mounted for action against Justice Alexandre de Moraes following revelations tied to the Banco Master investigation, Alcolumbre has so far kept those requests on hold. At the same time, he has privately indicated he could respond to escalating demands by opening proceedings against both Moraes and Mendonça — a so-called “cross impeachment.”

This internal Supreme Court conflict, now spilling into Congress, has exposed deeper tensions over the balance of power between the judiciary and the legislature. Moraes has accused Mendonça of politically motivated investigations that also targeted Alcolumbre, citing the Senate president’s control over the impeachment agenda. Mendonça, appointed during the previous administration, has taken steps that opposition lawmakers view as an attempt to restore institutional accountability.

Alcolumbre’s current term as Senate president ends on February 1, 2027. The next Senate, elected in October 2026, will choose its own leadership. A change in the presidency and a stronger conservative presence in the new Senate would make it significantly harder for Alcolumbre to secure the 41 votes needed for re-election. PL already holds the largest Senate caucus and is working to expand it further in the upcoming election.

The timing is not accidental. Senate leaders have indicated that any major decision on impeachment is likely to wait until after the October elections, when the new political map becomes clear. Until then, the threat of obstruction remains a powerful tool to prevent unilateral action by the Senate presidency.

The episode underscores a basic conservative principle: no branch of government should operate without meaningful checks. When the Senate leadership delays or blocks legitimate oversight of the judiciary, the legislature’s constitutional role is weakened. Whether that deadlock is resolved through negotiation, obstruction, or a change in Senate leadership after the elections will shape the next phase of Brazil’s institutional balance.
