Elon Musk Is Not Buying CNN: What’s Behind the Viral Claim

A post by conservative commentator Tiffany Savage (@patriot_savvy) exploded across X on September 23, 2026, declaring “BREAKING: ELON IS BUYING CNN!” The accompanying image showed a smiling Elon Musk standing in front of CNN headquarters with his hand extended, as if presenting the building. A follow-up post announced “Merger confirmed!” and predicted “seething and melties from the left.” A related meme depicted Musk holding a bathroom sink in front of the same building with the caption “Let that sink in.”
The claim is false. Elon Musk has not purchased CNN, signed a deal to acquire it, or announced any such transaction.
The rumor recycles a satirical story that first circulated in October 2024. That original piece, published on a site that labels its content parody, was repeatedly fact-checked as untrue by Reuters, Snopes, PolitiFact, and CNN itself. The network stated at the time that there was “no truth in rumors of a sale or change in ownership.”
What is actually happening in September 2026 is more limited and still unconfirmed. Paramount (under David Ellison’s Skydance) is completing a large merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN. Semafor reported that Paramount executives have discussed inviting Musk to join a syndicate of equity investors to help finance the combined company. Larry Ellison, David’s father, previously invested in Musk’s 2022 acquisition of Twitter (now X) and has underwritten a substantial portion of the current deal. An equity stake of that kind would give Musk an indirect financial interest in the entity that owns CNN; it would not make him the owner or give him operational control.
The timing of the latest wave of posts coincided with President Trump’s decision to restrict White House access for CNN, Politico, and MS NOW. That announcement amplified existing conservative enthusiasm for any perceived shift in media ownership and helped the old rumor travel again.
No official statement from Musk, Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery, or CNN has confirmed even the proposed investment, let alone a purchase. If a deal of that scale were finalized, it would generate extensive coverage from major financial and news outlets. As of September 24, 2026, that coverage does not exist.
The viral images themselves are edited photographs, not documentation of a transaction. They function as political memes rather than reporting.
In short, Musk is not buying CNN. A possible minority investment in a much larger media merger remains speculative. The difference between those two statements is the difference between a headline and the facts.
