The People Who Built This Movement Deserve to Decide Its Future

    By Hotspotnews

For years, millions of Brazilians who identify with Bolsonarismo invested their votes, their energy, and their hopes in a political project that promised more than a single term. They stood against institutions they viewed as captured, against a media and judicial apparatus they believed was stacked against them, and against the idea that power in Brazil is permanent for some families and temporary for everyone else. They did not wait through investigations, censorship claims, and electoral setbacks only to have the horizon of their project shortened by a decision made without them.

Flávio Bolsonaro’s announcement that he intends to use the political capital of a potential presidency to end consecutive re-election and to bar relatives up to the third degree from running in 2030 is presented as a democratic virtue. Term limits are a legitimate topic of debate. Many conservatives support them in principle. But the timing, the unilateral character of the commitment, and the specific restriction on the family that gave the movement its name turn a policy preference into something else: a preemptive closing of the path that the base itself helped open.

The people who sustained this movement were told that four years would not be enough to reverse decades of institutional capture. That argument, made repeatedly by figures inside the movement, is not an argument for permanent power. It is an argument for continuity long enough to build cadres, occupy positions, and leave structures that outlast any single administration. Announcing, on the eve of a runoff, that the very continuity many supporters considered essential will be constitutionally foreclosed—and that even the original leader of the movement would be barred—treats the base as a supporting cast rather than the principal.

In a democracy the people decide. They decide who may run by the rules in force when the election is held. They decide, through the Congress they elect, whether those rules should change. They decide whether a relative of a president is an asset or a liability. It is not for any one candidate, however well-intentioned, to declare in advance that certain names are closed and that the project they represent must be completed in a single term or not at all. That choice belongs to the electorate that created the opening, not to the person who happens to be standing in it at this moment.

If the goal is truly to limit personal power and prevent dynasties, the proper route is open debate, consultation with the coalition that made the candidacy viable, and a decision by the representatives the voters themselves send to Congress. Announcing the outcome first and asking the base to fall in line later inverts the relationship. The people who waited for this moment are entitled to more than a fait accompli. They are entitled to be heard before the rules that will govern the next chapter of their own movement are rewritten.
