Lula’s Familiar Playbook: Rules Bent- lies and corruption
Lula never played fair, why would he start now? He will do anything for power.

    By Hotspotnews

In a razor-thin Brazilian presidential runoff on October 25, 2026, incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured a historic fourth term with 51.78 percent of valid votes to Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s 48.22 percent. The margin of roughly 4.4 million votes arrived only after a last-minute intervention that altered the rules while voting was already underway. Flávio Bolsonaro has refused to accept the result and stated he will ask for annulment, arguing the process suffered a total break in equality among voters.

The controversy centers on a decision by Supreme Federal Court Justice Cristiano Zanin. Around 17:00 Brasília time—the normal closing hour—Zanin ordered a two-hour national extension of voting to 19:00. He acted on a petition from Lula’s campaign citing public-transport disruptions in cities across multiple states, including Bahia. Zanin is not a member of the Superior Electoral Court that normally administers elections; he is Lula’s former personal lawyer and was appointed to the high court by the president himself. The order applied only to sections that had not yet closed, yet the timing and nationwide scope created unequal conditions: some voters gained extra hours while others faced closed stations or different local circumstances.

Flávio Bolsonaro’s campaign had itself requested limited extensions in rain-affected areas of São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina. That fact does not erase the optics of a monocratic ruling by Lula’s former counsel overriding the specialized electoral authority at the precise moment polls were set to close. In post-election remarks, Bolsonaro described the move as an unprecedented “stroke of the pen” that changed the rules mid-game and produced a “total break in isonomy” between Brazilians in different cities and states. He said his legal team is already preparing the challenge and that it is impossible to recognize the outcome under these conditions.

This episode fits a longer pattern. Lula’s political career has repeatedly involved institutional maneuvers, legal battles, and close relationships with the judiciary that critics on the right view as tilted against opponents. The 2026 contest itself saw Flávio lead the first round (47.03 percent to 45.16 percent), only for the runoff to reverse under the shadow of the extension. Markets reacted sharply to the result, reflecting investor concern over continued fiscal and institutional trajectories.

Brazilian law allows challenges, and specialists note that grounds exist for contestation even if success is considered remote by many observers. The core conservative objection is straightforward: when a justice with direct personal and professional ties to one candidate unilaterally extends voting nationwide at the last minute, the appearance of fairness collapses. Lula’s team frames the extension as protection of the right to vote; the opposing view is that selective, late interventions by allies on the court have become a recurring feature rather than an exception. Flávio Bolsonaro has made clear he will not treat the outcome as settled. Whether courts ultimately entertain the annulment request or not, the episode has already reinforced deep skepticism among millions of Brazilians about equal application of the rules.
