Trump mentions Brazil as one of the countries that “tax too much”
The American president also implied that the country would be one of those that try to harm the US
President of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican Party), mentioned Brazil as one of the countries with “too much taxation”. The statement was made on Thursday (27.Jan.2025), in an event in which Republican congressmen were gathered in Florida.
“We will impose tariffs on countries and outsiders that really hurt us. They want… Well, they want to hurt us, but basically they want to improve their country. Look at what others do. China is a great creator of tariffs, as are India, Brazil and so many other countries. And we won’t let this continue, because we will put America in 1º place, always put America in 1º place.”, said Trump.
During the campaign, Trump promised to impose additional tariffs on some countries to combat what he called an invasion of “drugs” and “illegal immigrants”.
Shortly after taking office on January 20, the Republican said that his government intends to impose the 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada from February 1st. He also announced that he will charge an additional 10% on tariffs on Chinese products.
The strategy includes investigating the causes of US trade deficits with other nations and reviewing existing trade agreements.
“We will establish a very fair system, a very fair system, where the money will enter our coffers and America will be very rich once again. And this will happen very quickly,” Trump said on Monday (Jan 27).
“The time has come for the United States to return to the system that has made us richer and more powerful than ever,” he said.
According to the American president, the country’s economy was, from 1870 to 1913, driven by the collection of tariffs. “And this was the richest period in the history of the United States,” he said.
