Brazil: Lula on the high food prices: “Just don’t buy expensive products”

Lula on the high food: “Just don’t buy expensive products”

Supermarkets would be forced to reduce prices, according to the PT

The control of food prices depends on the “awareness” and “wisdom” of the people. This is what President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said on Thursday (6), amid the rise in food prices. The PT also suggested that Brazilians stop buying expensive products.

    – One of the most important things about  controling the prices is the people themselves. If you go to the supermarket and you suspect that such a product is too expensive, you don’t buy it. If everyone had the conscience and didn’t buy (sic) what is expensive, those who are selling will have to lower it to sell it, otherwise it will spoil it. This is the wisdom of the human being. This is an educational process that we will have to do with the Brazilian people – said Lula, in an interview with the radio stations Metrópole and Sociedade, from Bahia.

I am convinced that we will solve this problem soon, soon – he said.

    “CHANGE THE FRUIT”

It is not the first great suggestion that the Lula government gives to the population regarding the purchase of food. In January, the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, said that the population can replace the orange with another fruit if the prices are too expensive. The statement was made when talking about the possibility of the government reducing the import tax on foods that are more expensive in Brazil than abroad.

    – The international price is as expensive as here. What can be done? Change the fruit we’re going to consume. Instead of the orange, you can eat another fruit. Because, it’s no use lowering the tax rate, because there’s no product out there to put in here. So we will focus, of course, on the product that is cheaper out there – he pointed out.
