    Lula’s Fear Is Showing

    By Hotspotnews

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is no longer masking his anxiety. With the October presidential election approaching, the veteran leftist is maneuvering to limit American influence and slow-walk routine diplomacy with the United States. His actions reveal a clear concern: the growing strength of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and the possibility that Brazilian voters will reject another term of his brand of governance.

Lula has publicly told President Trump to stay out of Brazil’s election. He has also delayed formal approval of Trump’s nominee for U.S. ambassador until after the vote. These steps are not the confident moves of a leader secure in his position. They are the calculated delays of a politician who understands that American attention and the Bolsonaro family’s residual popularity pose a real challenge.

Flávio Bolsonaro represents continuity with the right-of-center agenda his father advanced: skepticism of expansive state control, stronger public security, and closer alignment with free-market partners rather than the socialist experiments that have damaged so many Latin American economies. Trump’s open regard for the Bolsonaro family and his criticism of Brazil’s judicial handling of political opponents have only amplified that contrast. Lula’s response—warning against “interference” while stalling ambassadorial approval—suggests he fears the optics and the momentum more than he admits.

This pattern is familiar. Leftist governments across the region have long treated robust conservative opposition and U.S. engagement as existential threats rather than normal democratic competition. When voters begin to lean toward candidates promising accountability, growth, and rejection of failed models, the incumbent often reaches for institutional levers and sovereignty rhetoric. Lula’s current posture fits that script.

Brazilians will decide their own future in October. Yet the spectacle of a sitting president conditioning basic diplomatic reciprocity on the election calendar, while lecturing a U.S. president about non-interference, sends a telling signal. Confidence does not look like this. Fear does.3
