Brazilian Talent and Free-Market Opportunity in Orange County

    By Christopher Costa for Hotspotnews

Brazilian visitors spend more than any other international group in Orange County. Roughly 22,000 Brazilians already call the county home. More importantly, they bring the traits that actually build prosperous communities: entrepreneurship, technical skill, competence, innovation, and a strong work ethic.

That is why I asked Orange County mayoral candidate Chris Messina how he would strengthen economic ties with Brazil, attract productive investment, and expand real opportunity for Brazilian talent already here.

Messina correctly recognized Brazilians as an entrepreneurial and hardworking community. He spoke about creating a level playing field so Brazilian expertise and competence can compete fairly for Orange County contracts—especially as the county expands in construction, infrastructure, technology, and aerospace. He pointed specifically to Embraer, one of the world’s leading aerospace firms, as proof that Brazil produces world-class engineering and industrial capability. This is not tourism marketing. It is recognition that Brazilian professionals, engineers, and business owners can compete at the highest levels on merit.

‘Messina also discussed assembling a focused team to attract businesses and investment from across the United States and the world. That is the right instinct: grow the economic pie through voluntary exchange, capital, and talent rather than through preferential treatment or identity-based quotas.

The Brazilian community in Orange County should not be valued primarily for what visitors spend. It should be valued for what residents build, the businesses they operate, the expertise they contribute, and the wealth they create every day. Approximately 22,000 Brazilians already live and work here. They deserve a fair chance to compete—nothing more, nothing less.

A seat at the table based on competence. Open competition. Recognition of results, not rhetoric. That is how free societies grow stronger, and that is the approach Orange County should take.
