Breaking News: White Smoke Rises—A New Pope Has Been Elected

    By Hotspotorlando News

VATICAN CITY, May 8, 2025 – In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney at approximately 11:45 AM Vatican time today, signaling that the conclave of cardinals has elected the 267th Pope to succeed the late Pope Francis. The announcement comes after two days of voting, following the start of the conclave on May 7, as reported by Vatican News. The identity of the new pontiff is expected to be revealed shortly, as the traditional declaration of *Papam”* (We have a Pope) is prepared to be made from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

The conclave, which began after the conclusion of the Novemdiales Masses for Pope Francis—who passed away earlier this year—drew intense global attention as the Church stands at a crossroads. With 120 cardinal electors participating, a two-thirds majority was required to elect the new Pope, per Vatican tradition. The process unfolded smoothly, with no reported breaks for prayer or discussion, indicating that the cardinals reached a consensus relatively quickly. This efficiency may reflect a unified vision for the Church’s future amid its ongoing challenges, including declining influence in Europe and North America, growth in the Global South, and internal debates over progressive reforms versus conservative tradition.

Speculation had been rife about the frontrunners. According to a Newsweek report from April 22, 2025, Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana, aged 76, was a leading candidate, with his election potentially marking the first African Pope since Pope Gelasius I (492–496 AD). Turkson’s advocacy for social justice and his experience as president of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development made him a favorite among those hoping for a continuation of Francis’s progressive legacy. On the other hand, conservative factions within the Church favored Cardinal Peter Erdő of Hungary, 72, who was seen as a return to the traditionalism of John Paul II and Benedict XVI, with betting odds placing him at 6:1. Cardinal Angelo Scola of Italy, 82, was also a contender, though his age made him a less likely choice for a long papacy.

The election of the new Pope comes at a pivotal moment. Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this year, was known for his progressive reforms, including his motu proprio *Traditionis Custodes* in 2021, which restricted the use of the Traditional Latin Mass—a move that sparked debate among traditionalists, as noted in his Wikipedia entry updated on May 7, 2025. His openness to secular engagement, as highlighted by Michelle Dillon, dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of New Hampshire, also drew criticism from some cardinals who feared the Church might lose its distinct identity. The new Pope will inherit these tensions, along with the challenge of addressing the Church’s growth in Africa and Latin America while revitalizing its presence in the West.

The conclave followed centuries-old traditions, with the cardinals processing into the Sistine Chapel on May 7 to begin voting. Vatican News detailed the protocol: if no candidate secured a two-thirds majority after three days, a brief pause for prayer and discussion would have been called, led by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, the Cardinal Proto-Deacon. However, the swift election suggests a strong consensus among the electors. Once the Pope was chosen, the most junior Cardinal Deacon summoned the Secretary of the College of Cardinals and the Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations into the Sistine Chapel to formalize the result.

As the world awaits the announcement of the new Pope’s identity, Catholics and observers alike are eager to see whether the Church will continue on the path of Francis’s reforms or pivot toward a more conservative direction. The new pontiff’s first words, traditionally delivered in a blessing from the balcony, will set the tone for his papacy—a papacy that will shape the Church’s role in a rapidly changing world.
