The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has unveiled body camera footage depicting a violent confrontation between two parents and a school resource officer at a nearby middle school. As per VCSO, 46-year-old Jorge Rivera and 45-year-old Dagmarie Aponte Iturrino visited Deltona Middle School on Tuesday, November 19, to demonstrate against their son’s battery accusation. The day before, their son had reportedly pushed a girl at the school. VCSO reported that Jorge Rivera grabbed the deputy’s Taser after supposedly striking her in the head. Rivera then “seized the Taser from (the deputy’s) grasp,” according to VCSO. The deputy promptly got up, aimed her firearm at Rivera, and instructed him to release the Taser. He complied, and he was swiftly apprehended in handcuffs. Rivera and Aponte Iturrino were both arrested and taken to Volusia County Jail. They are charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, disruption of school function, and trespassing on a school campus. Additionally, Rivera faces charges of armed robbery and grand theft for taking the deputy’s Taser. A “hate crime enhancement” has also been added to some of his charges because of a “derogatory slur” he directed at the deputy right before the physical altercation occurred. The couple’s son was present and witnessed the entire event, according to VCSO. Aponte Iturrino posted an $11,000 bond and was released from Volusia County Jail a few hours after her apprehension. Her husband, Rivera, was released the next day after posting a $42,000 bond. The sheriff’s office mentioned that the deputy involved in the incident was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of “concussion symptoms.” Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood praised the deputy’s “composed (and) efficient response to a violent attack that will not be tolerated in our schools or in our community.”
