Faith Over Power: André Mendonça’s Powerful Reminder from the Bench

    By Hotspotnews

In a moment of rare candor that should resonate with every conservative who values duty over ambition, Supreme Court Justice André Mendonça delivered a deeply personal reflection that cuts through the noise of Brazilian politics. Speaking at the National Seminar of the Associação Nacional de Magistrados Evangélicos (Anamel), the minister appointed by President Jair Bolsonaro laid bare the true cost of serving at the highest levels of the judiciary.

Mendonça did not mince words. The first two years on the Supremo Tribunal Federal, he confessed, were marked by “muita infelicidade” — a great deal of unhappiness. The position, he explained, carries far more burdens, responsibility, and relentless pressure than any privileges or power it might appear to confer. He spoke of the demands on lifestyle, the constant scrutiny, and the weight of decisions that affect an entire nation. Then came the clear-eyed warning to his fellow magistrates and to all who chase high office: “Não coloque seu coração no poder, não coloque seu coração no dinheiro, porque você vai se frustrar.” Do not place your heart in power. Do not place your heart in money. You will only find frustration.

This is not the voice of a man seeking applause or political advantage. It is the voice of a public servant grounded in faith, family, and principle. As an evangelical Christian and ordained pastor, Mendonça has long modeled the conviction that true authority is exercised as service, not self-promotion. His remarks at the Anamel gathering reaffirm that resilience is not found in institutional prestige or material reward, but in the quiet strength that comes from walking with God amid adversity.

In an era when too many in positions of power treat the judiciary as a stage for vanity or ideological combat, Mendonça’s testimony stands as a corrective. He reminds us that the highest calling is not to be a “star,” but a faithful steward. The pressures of the Court have tested him, yet faith and resilience have carried him through. That example matters. It challenges a culture that often equates success with visibility and influence, and it calls conservatives back to the older truths: character over careerism, duty over dominance, and eternal purpose over temporary power.

Mendonça’s words should encourage every citizen who still believes institutions can be reformed from within by men and women of conviction. The message is simple and profound. Power will disappoint. Money will not satisfy. But faith sustained through hardship endures. In sharing his own struggle so openly, the minister has offered not complaint, but witness — and that witness strengthens those who still fight for a Brazil ordered by justice, family, and truth.
