Florida Leads the Way: Adopting the Phoenix Declaration

Florida Leads the Way: Adopting the Phoenix Declaration for Better Schools

    By Hotspotnews

Florida just made history. On November 13, 2025, the state’s Board of Education voted yes—all seven members agreed—to make the Phoenix Declaration the main guide for public schools. This makes Florida the very first state in America to do it. It’s a big step toward stronger education that puts parents first and focuses on real learning.

    What Is the Phoenix Declaration?

Think of the Phoenix Declaration like a fresh start for schools, named after the mythical bird that rises from ashes. It came out in February 2025 from the Heritage Foundation, a group that pushes for conservative ideas. Over 50 experts, leaders, and groups signed it right away. The goal? To fix what they see as problems in schools, like too much politics and not enough basics.

At its heart, the declaration says education should build good people and strong citizens. It draws from old American thinkers like Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. They believed schools should teach kids how to live well, work hard, and love their country.

Florida’s leaders love this. Education Commissioner Manny Diaz signed the original document. He says it fits perfectly with what Florida already does: giving parents more say and keeping schools focused on facts, not fads.

    The Seven Big Ideas

The declaration boils down to seven simple rules for schools, families, and leaders. Here’s what they mean, in plain words:

    1. Parents Come First
Moms and dads are the top teachers in a kid’s life. Schools should let parents pick where their child goes to learn. Money from taxes should follow the kid, not stay stuck in one building.

    2. Be Open and Honest
No secrets in schools. Share what kids are learning, how they’re doing, and tips for helping them at home. Parents need the full picture to make good choices.

    3. Stick to Truth and What’s Right
Teach real facts, not trendy opinions. Help kids see the difference between good and bad, and why we should choose good every day. Science should match what we know is true.

    4. Share Our Story
Pass down the best of what we know—from America’s start to big ideas from the West and faith traditions. Show the wins and the mistakes so kids can build a better future.

    5. Build Strong Character
School isn’t just for jobs. It’s for growing brave, kind, and responsible people. Teach self-control and owning up to actions, so kids are ready for grown-up life.

    6. Aim for Top-Notch Learning
Focus on tough classes in math, reading, history, and more. Use methods that work, reward effort, and skip untested tricks.

    7. Grow Great Citizens
Love your country, but know it fully—good parts and tough lessons. Learn the big documents like the Constitution. Respect things like saying the Pledge, and practice arguing nicely.

These ideas aren’t new. They’re about going back to what made schools great: hard work, family teamwork, and pride in America.

Why Now? And What’s the Buz

This vote happened right after the board okayed new lessons on why communism failed—another win for teaching real history. Governor Ron DeSantis has pushed these changes to make Florida schools a model for the country. He wants kids to thrive, families to feel in control, and no room for what he calls “woke” distractions.

Not everyone cheers. Some teachers and groups worry it could push out diverse views or hurt public schools. They say it’s more about politics than kids. On social media like X, fans call it a “huge victory” for parents. Critics say it’s too one-sided.

But in Florida, it’s moving forward. Leaders plan to weave these principles into daily school life, from lesson plans to parent meetings. It could mean more choices, like vouchers for private or home schooling, and clearer reports on what’s taught.

A Brighter Future for Florida Kids?

Adopting the Phoenix Declaration is Florida saying, “We’re done with drift. Time for direction.” If it works, kids could leave school smarter, kinder, and prouder. Parents might feel more involved, and the state could inspire others.

It’s early days—just two days since the vote. But one thing’s clear: Florida isn’t waiting. They’re betting on virtue, excellence, and family to light the way. Will other states follow? Stay tuned. For now, it’s a bold move for better tomorrows.
