Indonesian Rescuers Recover Body of Brazilian Tourist After Tragic Fall from Volcano Cliff**

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Indonesian rescue teams recovered the body of a Brazilian tourist who died after falling off a cliff while hiking on Mount Rinjani, the country’s second-highest volcano, officials confirmed on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. The hiker, identified as 26-year-old Juliana Marins, slipped and fell during a group trek, triggering a challenging four-day search and rescue operation.

Marins, a dancer and publicist from Niterói, Brazil, was hiking with five friends and a local guide near the crater rim of Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara province. The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, when she lost her footing on the steep, slippery terrain and fell approximately 600 meters down a cliffside. Initial drone footage showed Marins moving after the fall, and rescuers reported hearing screams for help, raising hopes of a possible rescue. However, thick fog, shifting sandy terrain, and the cliff’s steep incline severely hampered efforts to reach her.

The search operation, involving 50 personnel, was described as highly dangerous by Muhammad Hariyadi, head of the local rescue team. Rescuers faced unpredictable weather and unstable ground, which slowed their progress. On Tuesday, June 24, teams confirmed Marins had succumbed to her injuries, likely exacerbated by exposure and the severity of the fall. Her body was recovered the following day and transported to a local hospital for examination before repatriation arrangements began.

Mount Rinjani, a popular destination for adventure tourists, is known for its stunning crater lake and challenging trails but also for its risks, with past incidents of hikers facing accidents or getting lost. Authorities have since urged trekkers to exercise caution, use experienced guides, and check weather conditions before embarking on such expeditions.

Marins’ family and friends expressed their grief, remembering her as a vibrant and adventurous spirit. The Brazilian embassy in Jakarta is assisting with repatriation and supporting the family during this difficult time. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable dangers of high-altitude trekking in remote areas.
