Lula and the PT Just Lost Their Favorite Electoral Advantage

The rules of the game have finally started to constrain the Workers’ Party. With the onset of Brazil’s defeso eleitoral—the three-month period before the election that restricts government publicity and the use of public resources—President Lula and the PT have been stripped of what many on the right correctly call their most powerful political weapon against Flávio Bolsonaro.
For years, the left has treated the machinery of the state as a permanent campaign tool. Institutional advertising, carefully timed inaugurations of public works, selective resource transfers, and relentless positive messaging through official channels have long served to inflate the image of the government while putting opponents at a structural disadvantage. That toolkit is now sharply limited. Public agents, including the president and governors, face clear prohibitions on using state resources and platforms in ways that favor candidacies or burnish their own records during the critical pre-election window.
This is not a technicality. It is a basic requirement of electoral fairness. In a democracy, the state does not belong to the party in power. When incumbents can freely deploy public money, public employees, and official communication channels to promote themselves, the playing field tilts heavily against challengers. The defeso exists precisely to reduce that imbalance. That it is now in force is good news for anyone who believes elections should be decided by voters rather than by the permanent apparatus of government.
Flávio Bolsonaro has emerged as the principal threat to Lula’s re-election. The PT’s response has often relied less on ideas and more on institutional pressure and narrative control. Restricting the government’s ability to dominate the public conversation through official means removes one of the left’s preferred levers. It forces the debate onto more equal ground—where arguments about economic performance, public security, family policy, and national sovereignty must stand on their own merits.
Conservatives have long warned that the Brazilian left confuses the state with the party. The defeso eleitoral is a modest but important reminder that this confusion has limits. It does not end the advantages of incumbency, nor does it prevent political speech. What it does is curb the most blatant forms of taxpayer-funded self-promotion and resource distribution timed for electoral gain.
The coming months will test whether the rules are enforced evenly. History suggests vigilance will be required. Yet the mere existence of these restrictions is a win for competitive democracy. When the government can no longer freely convert public institutions into campaign infrastructure, the opposition gains breathing room—and the voter gains a fairer contest.
Brazil deserves elections decided by the people, not by the permanent campaign of the state. For once, the calendar and the law are aligned against the old PT playbook. That is progress worth defending.
