Today, July 20, 2026, the TCU quietly archived yet another inquiry into the lavish international jaunts of first lady Janja Lula da Silva. The “investigation” into her globetrotting spending? Closed. Dismissed. Buried under mountains of legal mumbo-jumbo about “public interest” and “representative functions.”
How convenient.
While hardworking Brazilians scrape by with skyrocketing taxes, crumbling hospitals, and endless inflation, Janja racks up days abroad that rival — and sometimes exceed — those of President Lula himself. Luxury hotels, official delegations, support staff courtesy of the Presidential Personal Office, all on the public dime. And what does the TCU say? “Nothing to see here, folks. It’s all symbolic and institutional.”
Symbolic? Give me a break. This isn’t diplomacy; it’s a taxpayer-funded victory lap for the petista elite. The court, led by ministers quick to wave through these expenses, leaned on decrepit old norms and decrees to declare that the unelected first lady’s adventures somehow serve the “public interest.” Never mind the concrete complaints from opposition deputies about economic waste, lack of transparency, and agendas that smell more like personal tourism than serious state business.
This is the same system that hunts down small-town mayors for a misplaced brick in a school renovation or audits the opposition with a microscope. But when it’s the president’s wife living large on the international circuit? Unanimous acquittal. “No irregularities found.” Of course not. They weren’t looking very hard.
Brazil is hemorrhaging credibility. How can any honest citizen respect institutions that protect the powerful while preaching austerity to the rest of us? The message from today’s decision is crystal clear: rules are for the little people. The connected class gets a free pass, complete with fancy justifications about “diplomatic relevance” and “social pacts.”
Enough. Taxpayers aren’t ATM machines for first-family escapades. If Janja wants to represent Brazil, fine — do it transparently, efficiently, and without treating the public purse like a personal black card. Until then, every new archived inquiry is just more proof that this country suffers from selective blindness at the highest levels.
The Brazilian people deserve better than this farce. Real accountability isn’t optional — it’s the bare minimum for a serious nation. Today, once again, we fell short.
