The movement that rose against the corruption and ideological capture of the previous decade cannot afford advisors who treat the opposition press as just another professional contact while the rank and file are told to remain vigilant.
The timing could scarcely be worse. Flávio Bolsonaro is attempting to consolidate the right’s presidential path under the shadow of his father’s imprisonment and the relentless institutional pressure that followed. Michelle has built genuine popularity among evangelicals and women who see in her a defender of traditional values. Their public friction in June already strained the coalition. This latest episode risks turning residual distrust into open fracture. When the base begins asking whether the people closest to the family are fully committed to the same fight, the electoral arithmetic becomes harder, not easier.
Unity is not a slogan for election season. It is a strategic necessity. The left understands this instinctively; they close ranks even when their own scandals surface. The right, by contrast, has a recurring habit of allowing personal ambitions, old grievances, and professional networking to take precedence over the larger cause. Offering transmission-list materials to a petista outlet, whatever the stated intention, feeds the narrative that some on our side keep one foot in both camps. That perception corrodes morale faster than any external attack.
Accountability is not optional. If Costa’s explanation is complete and accurate, it should be documented transparently and the relationship with that particular journalist clarified once and for all. If the pattern of past statements critical of Flávio and present outreach to hostile media suggests divided loyalties, then the conservative movement has every right to demand clearer lines. Michelle herself faces a choice: distance the operation from any appearance of double-dealing or watch the suspicion continue to spread among those who once saw her as a reliable ally.
Brazil’s conservatives did not endure years of lawfare, censorship, and institutional hostility only to watch internal convenience undermine the hard-won cohesion required for 2026. The people who filled the streets, defended the ballot box, and refused to accept the rewriting of history deserve better than accidental exposures of cross-aisle convenience. Loyalty is not a performance for cameras. It is proven in the contacts one chooses to cultivate and the materials one chooses to share.
