USA: More firing in the military

Defense Health Agency Director U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Telita Crosland has served as the DHA’s director since Jan. 3, 2023. She recently reflected on her leadership journey through her upbringing in New York City and over 30 years in the U.S. military, sharing personal anecdotes and insights that have shaped her path as a leader, woman, and an African American professional.

U.S. Army Lieutenant General Telita Crosland, the head of the Defense Health Agency (DHA) and one of the senior  Black female officers in the Army, retired on February 28, 2025. She led a career of  32-years in the military. The move came shortly after President Donald Trump fired the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other senior officers, indicating a broader shake-up of military leadership.

Publicly, the Pentagon announced Crosland’s retirement, with Stephen Ferrara, the acting assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, thanking her for her services to the nation, the military health system, and Army medicine. However, officials speaking anonymously  said that she was explicitly told to retire, suggesting it was not a voluntary decision. The Pentagon declined to provide a specific reason for her forced retirement and referred inquiries to the DHA, which did not immediately respond.

Contextually, this event aligns with actions taken by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has prioritized eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the Pentagon, calling them divisive. Hegseth has publicly criticized the phrase “diversity is our strength” and ended identity-based commemorations like Black History Month. While no direct evidence ties Crosland’s removal to her race or gender—she herself downplayed these factors in a past DHA article—the timing and Hegseth’s agenda have led to speculation among observers. Crosland had previously noted the challenges of being a woman and African American in the military but framed her work around duty rather than identity.

The lack of an official explanation leaves room for interpretation. Some see it as part of a pattern of removing leaders perceived as misaligned with the administration’s goals, especially given the recent dismissal of other military figures like Coast Guard Commandant Linda Fagan. Others question whether it reflects a strategic shift in military health leadership or a broader purge of established figures. Without further Pentagon clarification, the precise motive remains unclear, though it fits within the administration’s aggressive restructuring efforts as of March 1, 2025.
