Brazil Without Bolsonaro: The Landscape and the Contenders

Bolsonaro’s been the right’s lightning rod since 2018—love him or hate him, he’s shaped the game. Without him, the political scene shifts, but it’s not a blank slate. Yesterday’s Paulista Avenue protest—hundreds of thousands, governors, senators—shows his base is alive, even if he’s sidelined. Lula’s got the presidency until 2026, but the question is who leads the opposition, or even the nation, post-Bolsonaro.

    The New Reality
    -Lula’s Run]

Lula’s in ‘til January 1, 2027, barring a collapse. His 24% approval’s shaky—food prices, tariffs, and yesterday’s defiance sting—but his coalition (PT and allies) holds Congress. No Bolsonaro means no unifying boogeyman for the left, but also no easy target to rally against.
    –

    Right Fragmented

Bolsonaro’s PL party and evangelical bloc don’t vanish, but they need a face. Yesterday’s unity—eight governors, 30+ senators—hints at potential, but without him, infighting’s a risk. X posts already speculate: “Who’s the next Bolsonaro?”

    – Center Rises?

Brazil’s middle—MDB, PSD types—might gain if the right splinters and Lula falters. They’re quiet now, but 2026 looms. Prepare to see the Centrão acting to take Bolsonaro out of the race and replace him with one of their own.

    Who Then?‘
    The Contenders

    1. Tarcísio de Freitas (Governor of São Paulo, Republicans Party)
    – Why Him?

Ex-Bolsonaro infrastructure minister, he’s a star—won São Paulo in 2022, a huge prize. At yesterday’s rally, he’s a visible heavyweight. Young (49), competent, less bombastic than Bolsonaro, but still pro-business, pro-farmer.

    – Edge: São Paulo’s clout

Latin America’s biggest city—and his tariff-friendly stance align with agribusiness, a Bolsonaro stronghold. X buzz calls him “the heir.”
    – Hurdle: Less charisma, untested nationally. Can he fire up the base?

    2. Romeu Zema (Governor of Minas Gerais, Novo Party)
    – Why Him? Heads Brazil’s second-most populous state, a fiscal hawk with libertarian vibes. He’s backed Bolsonaro but kept some distance—less baggage. Business loves him.
    – EdgeClean image, economic focus. Could pull moderates and the right.
    – Hurdle: Novo’s tiny niche appeal might not scale to Bolsonaro’s populist roar.

    3. Michelle Bolsonaro (Former First Lady, PL Party)
    – Why Her? She’s the family torchbearer, evangelical darling, fierce at rallies (spoke yesterday, per X). If Jair’s jailed or banned, she’s the emotional pull.
    – Edge; Inherits his base—women, pastors, loyalists. Raw passion.

    – Hurdle: No governing experience. Could be a figurehead, not a leader.

    5. Eduardo Leite (Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, PSDB)**
    – Why Him? A centrist wildcard—gay, progressive-ish, but pragmatic. Beat Bolsonaro’s pick in 2022. Could steal thunder if the right implodes.
    – Edge: Broad appeal, not tied to Bolsonaro
    – Hurdle: Too left for the base, too tame for a polarized fight.

     Beyond Individuals
    – Coalition Leader: Yesterday’s eight-party mix—PL, PP, Republicans—might birth a collective front, not a single savior. Governors like Ronaldo Caiado (Goiás) or senators like Magno Malta could co-lead.
    – New Face: Brazil’s history—Lula, Dilma, Bolsonaro—loves outsiders. A fresh populist (military? evangelical?) could surge by 2026 if the old guard stumbles.

    – 2026 Election: Lula’s out (term limits)—PT might run Fernando Haddad, but he’s weak. Without Bolsonaro, the right needs a unifier or risks splitting votes. Tarcísio’s the safe bet; Michelle’s the wild card.

    – Policy Tilt:

Bolsonaro’s gone, but his ideas—guns, farms, faith—stick. The right doubles down on tariffs and rural power; Lula’s green-and-social push fades without a foil.
    – Stability? No, Bolsonaro chaos might calm things—less “coup” talk. But yesterday’s million-strong cry says the divide’s deep. Whoever’s next inherits that mess.

    My Call
Tarcísio’s the frontrunner—he’s got the gig, the cred, and the stage (yesterday proved it). Brazil without Bolsonaro isn’t leaderless; it’s just less loud—until someone matches his spark. The base won’t quit, but they’ll pivot. Who do you see rising—or does it even matter if Lula’s machine keeps rolling?
