IMF Reality Check Exposes Lula’s Economic Denial. Brazil shamed in the world thanks to Lula

    By Hotspotnews

Brazilian Finance Minister Dario Durigan decided to call Argentine President Javier Milei a “clown” for daring to speak about Brazil’s economy. In the same breath he claimed Argentina’s country risk, public debt, and inflation were far worse. Within hours, the head of the International Monetary Fund delivered a public rebuke that left Brasília looking foolish.

Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the IMF, stated clearly that Argentina is in a healthier and more solid economic position since Milei took office. She voiced strong support for the government’s program and said there is no need for additional financial assistance. Those are not the words of an opposition activist. They come from the world’s most influential economic institution after reviewing the actual numbers.

Milei inherited an economy wrecked by years of Peronist populism: triple-digit inflation, depleted reserves, and chronic deficits. His administration imposed real fiscal discipline, cut wasteful spending, and began restoring credibility. The results are visible enough that the IMF now describes the situation as solid. Contrast that with Brazil under Lula, where fiscal promises repeatedly give way to higher spending, rising debt concerns, and the familiar pattern of blaming external factors or political opponents.

Durigan’s insult was not analysis. It was political theater. Attacking Milei’s character while ignoring the measurable improvement in Argentina’s trajectory reveals more about the insecurity inside Lula’s economic team than about Buenos Aires. When a left-wing government feels threatened by a neighboring country’s market-oriented reforms, the instinct is to ridicule rather than compete.

Conservatives have long argued that sound money, spending restraint, and respect for markets produce better outcomes than endless stimulus and state expansion. Argentina under Milei is providing a live demonstration. The IMF’s assessment confirms it. Brazilian officials can call Milei names all they like. The data and the Fund’s judgment are harder to dismiss.

The real embarrassment is not that an Argentine president spoke frankly. It is that Brazil’s leadership still prefers slogans over results.
