Motta’s statement on social networks generates malaise on the left after signaling ‘Trump effect’

Brazilian House leader, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), avoided making a personal commitment favorable to the advancement of the so-called ‘regulation’ of social networks and said that the discussion became more controversial after Donald Trump’s return to the presidency of the United States. The statement, given on Tuesday (4), generated dissatisfaction among left-wing sectors more aligned with the Planalto Palace, who are pushing for the approval of a proposal on the subject.
The federal government should send to Congress, in the coming weeks, a project that forces platforms to remove content considered illegal based on current legislation. Asked by the press about the progress of this agenda, Motta did not talk and did not indicate a deadline for analysis of the matter.
“Let’s wait, the college of leaders met for the first time last night [Monday, 3], we will have a quiet agenda this week, […] it should meet tomorrow morning [Wednesday, 5] again to deal with the agendas of the coming weeks,” he said in an interview with GloboNews.
The Speaker of the House also cited the Fake News Bill, by Deputy Orlando Silva (PCdoB-SP), which was debated in the last legislature, but did not proceed. According to Motta, the text faced resistance due to a “narrative of censorship”.
“That a gag project would be maybe created, where the right of opinion, to express oneself about society, would be taken away. We are seeing this subject being much debated now with Trump’s arrival in the United States, [with] the platforms changing even their behavior,” he said.
The parliamentarian classified the regulation of networks as a sensitive issue, marked by political differences. According to him, the debate takes place “from one pole to one way and another pole to another”, in reference to the dispute between government sectors favorable to the proposal and opposition groups that see a risk to freedom of expression. So far, there is no forecast for the Chamber to schedule the matter.
