Brazil’s Ibama staff recommend against Petrobras drilling in Amazon region

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has publicly expressed frustration with Ibama’s delays, highlighting a tension between economic development and environmental protection. Petrobras has been advocating for the project, arguing it could unlock a promising oil frontier similar to Guyana’s, but the technical staff’s stance reflects ongoing environmental concerns that have stalled the initiative since at least May 2023, when a previous drilling request was denied.
