Flávio Bolsonaro’s decision to select Deputy Alfredo Gaspar of Alagoas as his running mate represents a clear prioritization of ideological consistency, public security credentials, and regional strategy over the pursuit of broader centrist alliances or national name recognition.
Gaspar is not a household name across Brazil. He is a first-term federal deputy whose primary national exposure came as the relator of the parliamentary inquiry into large-scale frauds at the National Institute of Social Security (INSS). Before entering electoral politics, he spent more than two decades as a prosecutor, rose to become prosecutor-general of Alagoas, and served as the state’s public security secretary. That professional trajectory gives him direct experience with organized crime and the practical challenges of maintaining order in one of the country’s more difficult regions.
From a conservative standpoint, this background is an asset rather than a liability. Public security consistently ranks among the top concerns of Brazilian voters. Pairing the presidential candidate with someone who has spent his career confronting crime allows the ticket to speak with authority on an issue that many on the right believe the current government has handled inadequately. The INSS investigation adds a complementary anti-corruption dimension. By choosing the figure who led the probe into schemes that diverted billions from retirees and pensioners, the campaign signals a willingness to keep pressure on questions of integrity in public spending—questions that resonate with voters skeptical of the status quo.
The geographic element is equally deliberate. The Northeast remains the strongest regional base for the Workers’ Party. Selecting a native of Alagoas, a politician who has demonstrated local electoral strength and is not a pure outsider to the region, is an attempt to contest that dominance on its own terrain. It rejects the notion that the Northeast is permanently closed to non-left alternatives and frames the contest as one in which ordinary northeastern voters deserve better outcomes on security, infrastructure, and economic opportunity.
The pure PL ticket itself reflects a strategic choice under constrained circumstances. After several centrão parties opted for neutrality, the options for a broader coalition narrowed sharply. Rather than accepting a less aligned partner simply to secure additional television time or machine support, the campaign settled on an internal figure whose record tracks closely with core conservative priorities. This approach avoids the risk of diluting the message that often accompanies wider alliances. It keeps the ticket focused on security, accountability, and resistance to the left’s regional hegemony.
There are clear limitations. Gaspar’s limited national recognition means the campaign will have to introduce him effectively. The decision also forgoes the potential demographic signal that a female running mate might have provided, particularly among women voters where Flávio has faced greater difficulty. These are real trade-offs. Yet in Brazil’s polarized presidential contests, the top of the ticket and the dominant national narratives usually outweigh the personal fame of the vice-presidential candidate. The selection of Gaspar does not pretend to solve every vulnerability; it doubles down on the themes conservatives believe can both consolidate the existing base and expand it where the left has long held structural advantages.
In the end, the choice reflects a calculation that clarity on crime and corruption, combined with a credible presence in the Northeast, offers a more coherent path than a broader but more ambiguous ticket. Whether that calculation proves sufficient will depend on campaign execution, economic conditions, and the ability to unify anti-PT voters. From a conservative perspective, however, it is a consistent and purposeful decision rather than a mere fallback.
