A seized statement, a film, and a campaign under pressure

Federal police searches this week against producer Karina Gama produced a four-page account in which she describes being approached to make a plea deal against Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Veja reported that investigators found the document while executing warrants at her companies. Gama wrote that Fernando Sarney contacted her in May 2026, said he had great proximity to Supreme Court Justice Flávio Dino, offered legal support, and raised a delação premiada. She recorded other approaches as well, including from a pastor and a journalist. The pitch, in her telling, was clear: sign a plea implicating Flávio Bolsonaro and avoid police operations; refuse and risk becoming a target. She also wrote that she never saw Dino take part in those conversations and had no proof he knew about them.
Dino is the rapporteur of inquiries that now treat the Dark Horse production, parliamentary earmarks, and a large São Paulo city Wi-Fi contract with Gama’s Instituto Conhecer Brasil as parts of a possible single scheme. On the same day the statement became public, he unified strands of the São Paulo and federal investigations, barred her companies from public contracts, and authorized broader police access to the file. In the ruling he also cited signs of a wider system that could reach organized crime through contractors on the Wi-Fi project.
Dark Horse is the unfinished biopic of Jair Bolsonaro. Gama’s Go Up Entertainment produced it. Deputy Mário Frias is listed as executive producer and co-writer and is alleged to have sent earmarks, including about 2 million reais, to her institute. Flávio Bolsonaro, a presidential candidate, had already been shown in published messages seeking tens of millions of reais from banker Daniel Vorcaro for the same film. Reports have put the amount actually paid in the tens of millions.
The documented money trail is not trivial. Earmarks from allied deputies, a municipal contract worth more than 100 million reais, and private transfers all passed through entities Gama controlled. Those facts give the courts a formal basis to act. They also land in an election year. Searches, contract bans, and a witness statement that names Dino’s circle while the candidate’s campaign is underway produce an immediate political cost, whether or not every ruling is legally defensible.
Critics argue this is how power now works in Brazil: institutions aligned with President Lula use procedure against opponents, while similar networks on other sides have done the same when they held the levers. From that reading, the Gama statement is not an isolated irregularity. It is evidence that a sitting justice’s name can be invoked to squeeze a witness, and that the handling of the case can hurt a campaign even if the underlying funding questions are real. Others treat the same record as ordinary follow-through on public money and private transfers that predate the race.
The public record supports both the existence of a serious funding investigation and the existence of a campaign damaged by how that investigation is being run. The Gama document adds the missing political hinge: someone tried to turn the producer into a witness against Flávio Bolsonaro by offering protection. Whether voters read that as accountability or as persecution will decide if the operation weakens him or hardens support.
