Beijing’s Summit Threat Shows Why America Must Not Blink on Taiwan
By Hotspotnews
China is once again testing whether Washington will put a photo-op ahead of a core American interest. According to reports circulating this weekend from Kyodo News and other outlets, Beijing has told the United States it is prepared to cancel the planned Trump-Xi meeting later this month if the administration approves any new arms sales to Taiwan before the leaders sit down.
That is not diplomacy. It is coercion.
Taiwan is a self-governing democracy that produces the advanced chips the modern economy runs on. China claims the island as its own and has spent years building the military capacity to take it by force. U.S. law has long required Washington to help Taiwan maintain a credible defense. Selling weapons is not a favor. It is the practical expression of that commitment.
President Trump has treated the relationship with Beijing as a negotiation rather than a morality play. He has described arms sales as a bargaining chip. That is a realistic description of leverage. The Chinese Communist Party has never treated Taiwan as a bargaining chip. It treats the island as unfinished business. When Beijing draws a “red line” around new sales, it is telling the United States to stop strengthening the very deterrent that keeps a war from starting.
A cancelled summit would be inconvenient. A hollowed-out Taiwan would be a strategic disaster. Allowing the Chinese Communist Party to dictate what weapons a U.S. partner may receive would tell every ally in the region that American security guarantees are for sale at the price of a state dinner.
The better course is simple. Complete the sales Taiwan needs. Hold the meeting if Beijing still wants it. Walk away if it does not. Strength is what the Chinese leadership respects. Weakness is what it exploits.
