Brazil: “I’m not a communist, it’s not possible they believe this”

Moraes: “I’m not a communist, it’s not possible they believe this”

It’s not the first time the minister has ironized the subject

Supreme Court Justice, Alexandre de Moraes again criticized all performance of the big techs during a lecture at the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), in Brasília, last Tuesday. At the time, he mocked the accusations that he was a communist.

    – The mentality of the big techs returned to the mercantilism of the East India Company, from 1600, abandoned any capitalist modesty. And, unlike what they say, I’m not a communist. It’s not possible for them to believe that – he said.

Moraes has already starred in other moments of irony on the subject. Last year, he made a comment during a trial about how platform algorithms work.

I said I wanted to buy a red car and I never stopped receiving advertising – said the minister. Obviously, by virtue of my communism, I only consult red car, red tie. Red suits, is kind of cheesy. So, not this one – he ironized.

According to Moraes, technology giants “want to profit” without taking responsibility.

    – These companies realized that the European Union has approved laws that other countries will approve. And the regulation will begin. This is a danger that I have been warning. For now, we managed to maintain our sovereignty, our jurisdiction – he said.

Moraes has been criticized for decisions related to social networks. The Judicial Committee of the United States House of Representatives even summoned eight big techs to discuss the alleged censorship imposed by foreign governments.

The chairman of the committee, Jim Jordan, directly cited Moraes, accusing him of issuing “secret and arbitrary” orders to force US companies to remove content under threat of fines and ban from Brazil. The committee also approved a bill to bar the minister’s entry into the US.

During his speech, Moraes accused the companies of promoting a “brainwashing” in the population and of “falsifying the facts”. Last month, in a magna class at the Faculty of Law of the University of São Paulo (USP), he had already criticized the platforms, stating that “they are not sent by God”.
