This is not some minor bureaucratic slip. According to the investigations authorized by Supreme Court Justice André Mendonça, the probe centers on suspicions of traffic of influence and corruption involving efforts to open doors in the federal government—particularly around cannabis-based medicinal products at the Ministry of Health and contacts reaching into the presidential cabinet. At the center of this web sits Lulinha together with Roberta Luchsinger, the businesswoman repeatedly described as his close friend and associate. The same network includes the lobbyist known as “Careca do INSS,” already linked to massive fraud against retirees’ pensions. A second line of inquiry has also targeted alleged influence-seeking at Dataprev.
Let that sink in. While ordinary Brazilians struggle with inflation, insecurity, and the consequences of years of mismanagement, the family of the man who occupies the highest office—and those closest to him—is once more entangled in questions of privileged access and potential favoritism. The Federal Police’s own reporting flags contacts with public servants, including those in the presidential orbit, and treats Roberta Luchsinger as a central figure working alongside Lulinha to advance the interests in question. Reports have also noted her visits to the Planalto. If confirmed, a direct channel into the seat of power elevates this from personal business dealings to a question of institutional integrity at the very center of the Republic.
President Lula has publicly insisted he will not shield his son and that the law must apply equally. Fine words. Brazilians have heard versions of them before. What the country needs is not carefully worded assurances but full transparency, rigorous investigation free of political interference, and real accountability—regardless of last names, personal friendships, or party banners. The pattern is too familiar: influence networks, opaque relationships between the president’s son and his associates, and the quiet assumption that proximity to power confers special privileges.
Conservative Brazilians who value the rule of law, limited government, and equal justice under the law should not look away. This is precisely why skepticism toward concentrated power and the circles that orbit political families remains healthy. When the machinery of the state appears to open doors for those closest to the president and their trusted associates, public trust erodes. Institutions meant to serve the nation risk becoming instruments of private advantage.
The Federal Police must be allowed to complete its work without obstruction or selective leaks. The Supreme Court must ensure the process remains independent. And the Brazilian people deserve clear answers: Was there truly a contact operating from within the Planalto? What role did Lulinha and his close associate Roberta Luchsinger play? What, exactly, was sought in exchange for access? Who benefited?
Anything less than a thorough, transparent accounting will only deepen the cynicism that already poisons Brazilian public life. The country has endured enough scandals. It cannot afford another chapter in which the powerful and those nearest to them protect their own while ordinary citizens pay the price. Demand the truth. Demand accountability. The integrity of the Republic depends on it.
