Cronyism in Brasília: Lula’s Son and the Multi-Million Government Contracts

    By Hotspotnews

Once again, the Brazilian public is confronted with a familiar pattern under the Workers’ Party: a company tied to the president’s family securing lucrative federal contracts while federal investigators probe alleged influence peddling.

According to recent reporting based on official transparency data, the technology firm 3Structure IT holds four active contracts with the Lula administration totaling approximately R$55.7 million. These agreements cover technology services for the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Defense through the Army, and the Ministry of Education. Payments already received by the company since 2023 approach R$47 million. The firm is central to a Federal Police investigation into suspected tráfico de influência involving Fábio Luís Lula da Silva, widely known as Lulinha, the president’s eldest son. The Supreme Court authorized the inquiry, and investigators are examining whether Lulinha used his position to open doors for the company in government agencies, including Dataprev.

This is not an isolated technical procurement story. It is the latest chapter in a long record of family proximity to public money under successive PT governments. When the son of the president is linked—even through alleged lobbying—to firms winning multi-year, multi-million-real contracts from ministries controlled by his father’s administration, the appearance of impropriety is overwhelming. Ordinary Brazilians struggling with inflation, public services, and high taxes have every right to demand answers. Why do contracts of this scale flow so readily toward networks close to the Planalto?

The defense has dismissed the investigation as a “fishing expedition.” That response is predictable and insufficient. Transparency portals exist precisely so citizens can track these expenditures. The contracts are real. The investigation is real. The familial connection is real. Pretending that the mere existence of competitive bidding or technical justifications erases the political optics is an insult to the public’s intelligence.

Conservative voices have long warned that left-wing governments expand the state not merely for ideology but for patronage. Large public contracts become tools of influence, loyalty, and enrichment. When those contracts land near the first family, the principle of equal treatment under the law is undermined. Brazilians of every background deserve a government that awards contracts on merit rather than proximity to power.

Accountability requires more than press releases. It requires thorough investigation free of political interference, full disclosure of how these contracts were awarded, and consequences if wrongdoing is proven. The Brazilian people did not elect a dynasty. They elected a republic that is supposed to serve the nation rather than the family that temporarily occupies the presidential palace. Until that standard is enforced without fear or favor, stories like this will continue to erode public trust—and rightly so.
