Diplomatic Rift Deepens as Milei Amplifies US Criticism of Lula

    By Hotspotnews

Tensions between Argentina and Brazil, already at their lowest point in decades, received fresh public emphasis this weekend when Argentine President Javier Milei shared a sharp denunciation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by a Republican member of the US Congress.

On Saturday, Florida Congressman Carlos Gimenez publicly described Lula as a “corrupt and criminal” figure who had destroyed Brazil, damaged the alliance between Brazil and the United States, and enabled communist dictatorships across the Western Hemisphere. He called for Lula to be held accountable. A Brazilian news account reported the remarks, and Milei quoted the post with the brief, sarcastic reply “UPs!” (Oops)

Gimenez later addressed Milei directly, stating that forces of liberty would continue advancing throughout the hemisphere and thanking the Argentine president for his leadership. The exchange added an international dimension to an already heated bilateral dispute.

The current crisis traces back to late July, when Milei traveled to Brazil to support the presidential candidacy of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. During that appearance, Milei referred to Lula as a “thief,” “convict,” and “socialist trash,” among other insults. Brazil responded by recalling its ambassador from Buenos Aires and summoning Argentina’s envoy in Brasília for explanations.

Milei repeated similar personal criticisms in subsequent interviews, prompting Brazil in early August to formally downgrade diplomatic relations. Brazil announced that its ambassador would not return and that ties would be handled at the lower chargé d’affaires level for as long as the verbal attacks continued. Argentina stated it would not take reciprocal diplomatic steps.

Observers note that the two presidents have not held an official bilateral meeting since Milei took office. The dispute has raised concerns about effects on Mercosur cooperation and bilateral trade, given that Brazil remains Argentina’s largest commercial partner. Ideological differences—Milei’s free-market libertarian stance versus Lula’s left-wing government—have long colored the relationship, but the recent personal attacks and formal diplomatic measures mark a significant deterioration.

The involvement of a US lawmaker critical of leftist governments in the region has drawn additional attention to the rift, underscoring how the Argentina–Brazil dispute is intersecting with broader hemispheric political alignments. As Brazil approaches its October presidential election, the public confrontation continues to play out both through formal diplomatic channels and on social media.
