It’s About Time: Ethics Committee Finally Moves Against Erika Hilton’s Attack on Women

    By Hotspotnews

The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies’ Ethics Committee did the right thing this week. By a 10-to-5 vote, it approved the continuation of a process that could strip deputy Erika Hilton of her mandate. For once, parliamentary decorum is not being treated as an optional guideline reserved only for those outside the progressive identity hierarchy.

The case is straightforward. In March, shortly after being elected president of the Commission for the Defense of Women’s Rights—the first biological male to hold that position—Hilton took to social media. She dismissed critics as “transfóbicos e imbeCIS” and told them they could “espernear” and “latir.” In plain language, she labeled ordinary women who object to a man leading a women’s rights body as idiots and compared them to barking dogs.

That is not free speech in the abstract. It is a sitting federal deputy, using the platform of elected office, publicly demeaning the very constituency the commission is supposed to represent. The Missão party filed the representation alleging breach of parliamentary decorum. The Ethics Committee has now ruled that the complaint has enough substance to proceed. Hilton will have the chance to present a defense. That is how the process is supposed to work.

Conservatives have argued from the beginning that placing a biological male at the head of a women’s rights commission was an ideological imposition, not progress. Women’s spaces exist because biological sex is real and consequential. When that reality is subordinated to self-identification, ordinary women lose ground—on sports, prisons, shelters, and now on the official body meant to defend their interests. Hilton’s subsequent insults only confirmed the problem. Instead of addressing legitimate concerns about fairness and safety, she chose mockery and contempt.

The vote is not a final judgment of cassation. The legislative calendar and the approaching elections make a full resolution before the end of the current term unlikely. Still, the signal matters. For too long, certain progressive figures have operated under the assumption that identity status grants immunity from the rules that bind everyone else. The Ethics Committee’s decision rejects that double standard.

Parliamentary decorum is not a partisan invention. It exists to preserve the dignity of the institution and the respect owed to the citizens it serves. When a deputy treats half the population as an “esgoto da sociedade” for refusing to rewrite biological reality, the institution has a duty to respond. The fact that this response has finally begun is overdue, not radical.

Brazil’s women deserve representatives who defend their interests rather than lecture them for noticing sex. The Ethics Committee has taken a necessary first step. The rest of the Chamber should take note.
