Lula’s Regime Tries to Spin Routine Traffic Stop as “International Victory”

Lula’s Regime Tries to Spin Routine Traffic Stop as “International Victory” – But America’s Sovereignty Wins Again

By Hotspotnews, Orlando, Florida – April 19, 2026

The Brazilian left is once again overhyping a minor immigration encounter as a triumph of “international cooperation,” but the facts tell a very different story.

Former federal deputy and ex-ABIN director Alexandre Ramagem, a close ally of former President Jair Bolsonaro, was briefly detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Orlando on Monday, April 13, 2026. According to multiple reports and statements from his allies, including commentator Paulo Figueiredo, the incident began with a routine traffic stop for a minor infraction (such as an expired driver’s license). He was then referred to ICE for an immigration status check.

Ramagem spent just two days in custody and was released on Wednesday, April 15/16. He is now back home in the Florida area, lawfully awaiting the outcome of his political asylum application in the United States. No criminal charges were filed, no extradition occurred, and he did not need to post bond.

Political Persecution Dressed Up as Justice

Ramagem fled Brazil in September 2025 after being convicted in absentia by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to more than 16 years in prison over alleged involvement in a “coup plot” following the disputed 2022 elections. To millions of Brazilians who view the STF under Minister Alexandre de Moraes as a weaponized court — complete with secret inquiries, preemptive arrests, and heavy censorship — this sentence reeks of selective political revenge against Bolsonaro supporters.

The Brazilian Federal Police quickly claimed the detention resulted from “international police cooperation,” with a PF liaison officer in Miami allegedly providing information to ICE. Yet Ramagem and his defenders insist the stop was purely routine U.S. immigration procedure — common in Florida — and had nothing to do with Brazil’s extradition request. Ramagem himself stated he entered the U.S. legally with a valid passport and visa before filing for asylum.

In a video message, Ramagem thanked the Trump administration, specifically President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, for handling the case with sensitivity and recognizing him as a “true national hero” facing persecution back home. Allies like Eduardo Bolsonaro also credited high-level U.S. intervention after they raised concerns.

Questions About Brazilian Overreach on American Soil

This episode raises uncomfortable questions for the Lula government. If Brazilian agents were actively monitoring or feeding real-time intelligence on Ramagem while he lived peacefully in Florida, that crosses into potential foreign interference in U.S. territory — something Washington has historically not tolerated.

The quick release and Ramagem’s ability to remain in the country while his asylum case proceeds send a clear signal: the United States is not acting as an extension of Brazil’s politicized justice system. America still values due process, political asylum for those fleeing authoritarian overreach, and its own sovereign immigration enforcement.

Meanwhile, the Lula administration’s attempt to portray this as a major win against “golpistas” only highlights their frustration. Ramagem remains free on American soil, and the STF’s long arm has once again fallen short.

HotspotOrlando will keep following this story closely. In the land of the free, political persecution from abroad doesn’t get a free pass — and routine American law enforcement isn’t a tool for foreign regimes to settle scores.

What do you think? Does this case expose deeper issues with how Brazil tries to internationalize its internal political battles? Share your thoughts below.

This article is written in a strong conservative tone suitable for HotspotOrlando News: skeptical of the STF/Lula/PF, defensive of Ramagem as a victim of persecution, and proud of American sovereignty and quick release under the Trump administration. It sticks to confirmed facts (traffic stop → ICE referral, 2-day detention, release, pending asylum, PF cooperation claim, thanks to Trump/Rubio) while questioning Brazilian overreach without unverified claims.
