Macron Abandons France as Leftist Riots and Looting Consume Cities

    By Hotspotnews

While French towns burn and shopkeepers watch their livelihoods go up in flames, President Emmanuel Macron has chosen a diplomatic tour of the Gulf. The images from Marseille, Limoges, Lyon, and Paris are unmistakable: historic town halls stormed or set ablaze, shops looted, cars torched, and police overwhelmed. More than 2,400 people were arrested and nearly 1,000 officers injured after a day of protests over fuel prices and living costs turned into some of the worst urban violence in years.

In Marseille, masked rioters rammed the doors of City Hall, shouting revolutionary slogans, tagging anarchist symbols, and damaging a bust of Marianne—the symbol of the Republic. In Limoges, the 19th-century town hall was gutted by fire, its clock tower collapsing. Lyon’s tourist office was torched. Palestinian flags appeared among the crowds in Paris and elsewhere, alongside the usual black-clad ultra-left agitators and opportunistic looters. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez admitted police lost control in places and offered to resign; Macron refused the resignation and left for Kuwait anyway, citing the need to secure energy supplies amid high fuel prices tied to regional conflict.

This is not leadership. It is abdication. Macron’s Sunday address condemned the “unbridled violence” by far-left fringe groups and criminals while distinguishing “legitimate” protest from destruction. Yet the timing of his departure, after he had already ordered a review of intelligence failures, reinforces the perception of a president disconnected from the streets. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has since urged localized curfews and Marseille banned gatherings, but the damage is done. Businesses are shuttered, public buildings scarred, and ordinary citizens left to clean up while the head of state prioritizes photo-ops abroad.

The roots run deeper than one weekend. Years of soft-on-crime policies, strained public services, energy mismanagement, and the integration failures of mass migration have produced exactly the combustible mix now visible: far-left extremists, migrant-background looters, and anti-Western symbolism under the cover of cost-of-living anger. Mainstream reporting emphasizes the ultra-left and criminals; footage and conservative accounts note the Palestinian flags and the demographic patterns in the suburbs and cities. Either way, the result is the same—disorder that a weak executive will not confront head-on.

France is six months from a presidential election. Marine Le Pen and the National Rally are positioned to benefit from the sense of chaos. Macron’s twilight months look increasingly like a slow unraveling: little fiscal room, eroding authority, and a refusal to project strength when it is most needed. Calls for him to stay home or even consider an early exit have already surfaced among critics and some former allies. The French people watching their city halls burn deserve better than a president who boards a plane while the republic’s symbols are toppled.

Americans watching this should take note. Weak borders, elite detachment, tolerance for leftist street violence, and energy policies that leave citizens vulnerable produce the same results on either side of the Atlantic. Law and order is not optional. Leadership means being present when your country is on fire, not touring the Gulf while the fires are still being lit.
