Two students from Volusia County are facing serious charges after they reportedly made threats to carry out a shooting at their high school. According to Sheriff Mike Chitwood of Volusia County, a 17-year-old female student at T. Dewitt Taylor Middle-High School in Pierson posted a picture on Snapchat on September 18 with the caption, “I’m going to shoot up the school.” The sheriff mentioned that the school-issued laptop of the female student was visible in the photo. Shortly after the threatening photo was posted, a 16-year-old male student from the same school responded with a one-word comment, “Same.” Sheriff Chitwood emphasized that both students were arrested and charged with making threats to conduct a mass shooting. He urged parents to have conversations with their children about the severity of such “jokes” and warned that they can lead to serious consequences. Sheriff Chitwood expressed frustration over the unnecessary disruption caused by these incidents and the negative impact on the majority of students who are law-abiding citizens. In recent days, multiple students in Central Florida have been arrested for various incidents involving firearms, including threats and possession of weapons on school grounds.
