The Imperative Dismissal of Felipe Santa Cruz: A Stand for Decency and Public Integrity

In a bold and necessary move, Rio de Janeiro city councilor Rafael Satiê has called for the immediate exoneration of Felipe Santa Cruz, the city’s Secretary of Government, following a shocking and unacceptable statement wishing “a bullet in the neck” for former President Jair Bolsonaro.

This incident, unfolding on the streets of Rio, is not just a personal vendetta but a glaring breach of the decorum and responsibility expected of public servants. For conservatives who cherish law, order, and the moral fabric of our society, this moment demands swift action to safeguard the integrity of our institutions.

Santa Cruz’s inflammatory rhetoric crosses a line that no public official should ever approach. As Secretary of Government, he holds a position of trust, tasked with serving the people of Rio with impartiality and respect. Yet, his call for violence against a former head of state—however politically divisive—undermines the very principles of civil discourse and governance that conservatives hold dear. This is not about defending Bolsonaro alone; it is about upholding a standard where public office is not a platform for personal grudges or extremist outbursts. Satiê’s demand for Santa Cruz’s dismissal is a rightful assertion that such behavior has no place in the halls of power.

The roots of this conflict trace back to a long-standing feud, ignited in 2019 when Bolsonaro made remarks about the disappearance of Santa Cruz’s father, Fernando Santa Cruz, a student activist killed during Brazil’s military dictatorship. While the pain of that historical loss is undeniable, Santa Cruz’s response—escalating to a public call for violence—reflects a troubling pattern of using personal trauma as a justification for reckless rhetoric. Conservatives recognize the importance of historical accountability, but we also insist that the pursuit of justice must never descend into the very violence it seeks to condemn. The National Truth Commission’s findings of over 400 disappearances during the dictatorship provide context, yet they do not excuse Santa Cruz’s actions—rather, they highlight the need for measured leadership, not vengeance.

initiative is more than a political maneuver; it is a defense of the conservative values that have long sustained Brazil’s social order. Public officials must be held to a higher standard, free from the ideological biases that Santa Cruz has allegedly carried from his tenure at the Brazilian Bar Association, where critics have accused him of politicizing the institution. His role under Mayor Eduardo Paes should be one of unity and service, not a stage for settling scores. The support from citizens and fellow councilors, as seen in the robust reaction on social media, signals a growing demand for accountability that transcends party lines.

Failure to act on this matter risks emboldening a culture where inflammatory speech becomes normalized among those in power. Conservatives must champion a return to civility, where the rule of law prevails over personal vendettas, and where public servants are judged by their conduct, not their political affiliations. Rafael Satiê’s call for Santa Cruz’s dismissal is a critical step toward that goal. It is time for Mayor Paes to heed this demand, ensuring that Rio’s government reflects the values of order, respect, and responsibility that its people deserve.

Let this be a turning point—a moment where we reaffirm that public office is a privilege, not a license for hate. The dismissal of Felipe Santa Cruz is not just a victory for conservatives; it is a triumph for all who believe in a stronger, more principled Brazil.
