Yanomami Tragedy Deepens Under Lula: Deaths Surpass Bolsonaro Era Despite Promises and Billions Spent

    By Hotspotnews

Official data from Brazil’s Ministry of Health reveal a stark and uncomfortable truth. Between 2023 and 2025, 1,121 Yanomami indigenous people died in their territory. That figure already exceeds the 951 deaths recorded in the comparable period of the previous administration which also dealt with the pandemic in that same period.

What was sold as a humanitarian rescue mission has produced higher cumulative mortality. The creation of a new Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, emergency decrees, massive deployments of health workers, and hundreds of millions of reais invested have not delivered the promised turnaround in total lives lost.

    What is killing the Yanomami?

Health authorities and field reports consistently point to the same primary causes:

    • Severe malnutrition, especially among children under five
    • Malaria (though lethality has declined with more testing)
    • Acute respiratory infections and pneumonia
    • Diarrheal diseases
    • External causes, including violence and aggression linked to the persistent presence of illegal miners and organized crime

These are largely preventable conditions when basic sanitation, consistent medical access, food security, and territorial control exist. The territory continues to suffer from incomplete removal of illegal mining operations, contaminated rivers, disrupted traditional food systems, and logistical difficulties in reaching remote villages.

    Consequences

The human cost is measured in empty villages and grieving families. Children remain the most vulnerable group. High child mortality weakens the demographic future of the Yanomami people and erodes cultural continuity.

Politically, the numbers undermine the narrative that simply increasing spending and creating new bureaucracies solves complex Amazonian problems. Year-to-year improvements after the 2023 peak exist, yet the three-year total still stands higher. This raises legitimate questions about the effectiveness of the current administration approach to indigenous health and territorial security.

Persistent illegal mining continues to spread disease, introduce alcohol and violence, and degrade the forest the Yanomami depend on. Incomplete control of the territory means the underlying drivers of the crisis remain active.

For Brazilian taxpayers, the episode illustrates a recurring pattern: large public expenditures accompanied by limited accountability for results. For the Yanomami themselves, the consequence is continued suffering that official announcements of “progress” cannot erase.

The data come from Ministry of Health figures submitted to Congress and reported by major outlets such as VEJA. They deserve sober examination rather than selective silence.
