Lula government spends R$ 24,000 on daily allowances of Janja’s advisors on a trip to Rome
Value covers only daily rates and does not include tickets and accommodation; agenda included meeting with Pope Francis.
The first lady Janja Lula da Silva to Rome, trip to Italy, representing Brazil at the International Agricultural Development Fund meeting, resulted in an expense of R$ 24,000 only with daily allowances of four advisors who accompanied her. The amount was revealed by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo and does not include airline tickets or accommodation.
Each of the assistants – Claudio Adão Souza, Taynara Cunha, Edson Pinto and Julia Silva – received R$ 6,000 (US$1K) in international daily allowances, corresponding to two and a half days of travel. The official designation for the mission was published in the Official Gazette of the Union and authorized the removal of the advisors between February 9 and 14.
The trip took place after an invitation from Minister Wellington Dias (Development and Social Assistance), responsible for ensuring Janja’s official presence at the event. Without this invitation, the legislation would prevent the first lady from representing the government.
The Planalto Palace did not provide details about the total costs of the trip, and the first lady’s team did not comment on transportation and accommodation expenses. The Ministry of Social Development stated that the numbers will be disclosed in the Official Gazette, without informing the date.
In addition to participating in the UN event, Janja met on Wednesday (12) with Pope Francis in the Vatican. The meeting addressed the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative launched at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2024.
